A former police chief and convicted killer known as the "Devil in the Ozarks" was captured by law enforcement 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) northwest of the prisonhe escaped fromfollowing a massive, nearly two-week-long manhunt in the rugged mountains of northern Arkansas, authorities announced Friday. Grant Hardin, a former police chief in the small town of Gateway near the Arkansas-Missouri border, was serving lengthy sentencesfor murder and rape. Eventually, his notoriety led to a TV documentary, "Devil in the Ozarks." Hardin briefly attempted to run from officers when he saw them approach Friday afternoon, but he was quickly tackled to the ground, said Rand Champion, a spokesperson for the Arkansas prison system. "He'd been on the run for a week and a half and probably didn't have any energy left in him," he added. Hardin's identity was confirmed through fingerprinting, the Izard County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. There's no indication that Hardin was injured, though he will be checked for dehydration and other medical problems. Now, investigators are "chomping at the bit and really ready to talk to him," said Champion, who used his cellphone to capture an image of Hardin being led away by officers. Hardin said nothing during those moments. The escape, search and eventual capture Hardin had been held at the Calico Rock prison since 2017 after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in a fatal shooting. In order to escape, he impersonated a corrections officer "in dress and manner," according to a court document. A prison officer in one of the guard towers opened a secure gate, allowing him to walk out of the facility. Champion said that someone should have checked Hardin's identity before he was allowed to leave, describing the lack of verification as a "lapse" that's being investigated. Searchers had been using bloodhounds, officers on horseback, drones and helicoptersin their hunt for Hardinsince he escaped on May 25. Shortly after the escape,a bloodhound found — then quickly lost — Hardin's scentwhen heavy rains blew through the area, Champion said. The bloodhound tracked Hardin's path for less than a quarter of a mile, after which could have gone in any direction. "That was one of the most frustrating things, that they were able to track him but then they lost him because of the rain," Champion said. An elite and highly trained U.S. Border Patrol team had recently joined the search, federal authorities announced this week. The Border Patrol Tactical Team provided "advanced search capabilities and operational support," U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. Its members are experienced in navigating complex terrain, the agency said earlier this week. The team tracked Hardin through the region known for itsrocky and rugged landscape,thick forests and an extensive cave network. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol sharedphotos on Facebookof Hardin shirtless and covered in mud, laying face down with his hands tied behind his back on Friday. The post said that Hardin was "turned over to Arkansas State Police unharmed" by the federal agency. A spokesperson for the agency didn't respond to a phone call and emailed request for comment regarding the post on Friday night. Hardin's criminal convictions Hardin pleaded guilty in 2017 to first-degree murder for the killing of James Appleton, 59. Appleton worked for the Gateway water department when he was shot in the head Feb. 23, 2017, near Garfield. Police found Appleton's body inside a car. Hardin was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Hardin's DNA was also matched to the1997 rape of a teacherat an elementary school in Rogers, north of Fayetteville. He was sentenced to 50 years for that crime. Cheryl Tillman, Appleton's sister, was with her mother and sister at a flea market in Ozark, Missouri, when law enforcement called to tell her Hardin had been captured. Tillman is also the mayor of Gateway, the 450-person town where Hardin was briefly police chief. Tillman told The Associated Press that Hardin's capture was a "big sigh of relief" for her whole family. "We don't have to walk around, turning around all the time, thinking somebody's on our back," Tillman said, emphasizing her appreciation for the officers who helped capture Hardin. A problematic past in law enforcement Though Hardin was police chief in Gateway for just four months, he had served as an officer in multiple communities around northwest Arkansas, his police records show. In his first job as a police officer 35 years ago in Fayetteville, Hardin struggled almost immediately, his supervisors said. He was dismissed by Fayetteville police, but kept getting hired for other law enforcement jobs in northwest Arkansas over the years. Hardin worked about six months at the Huntsville Police Department before resigning, but records do not give a reason for his resignation. He later worked at the Eureka Springs Police Department from 1993 to 1996. Former Chief Earl Hyatt said Hardin resigned because Hyatt was going to fire him over incidents that included the use of excessive force. "He did not need to be a police officer at all," Hyatt told television station KNWA. By the time he was the police chief in Gateway in 2016, "he was out chasing cars for no reason," Tillman recalled in the documentary "Devil in the Ozarks."

LOS ANGELES — Federal immigration authorities raided three locations across the city on Friday, officials said, in "chaotic" action that drew immediate rebuke from local lawmakers and a distanced response from L.A. law enforcement. "Today, ICE officers and agents alongside partner law enforcement agencies, executed four ​federal search warrants at three location in central Los Angeles," a statement from the Homeland Security Investigations said. As federal agents — often wearing camouflage and bulletproof vests with their faces covered — burst into buildings, protesters and supporters soon showed up creating tense scenes throughout the city. Witnesses reported tear gas being employed at least one of the locations to clear a path for federal agents to take in their prisoners. "Approximately 44 people" were administratively arrested ​​and one person was arrested on an obstruction charge, the HSI statement said. Gov. Gavin Newsom strongly denounced the raids. "Continued chaotic federal sweeps, across California, to meet an arbitrary arrest quota are as reckless as they are cruel,"Newsom saidin a statement. "Donald Trump's chaos is eroding trust, tearing families apart, and undermining the workers and industries that power America's economy." Among those arrested was SEIU California President David Huerta, who represents an estimated 750,000 service workers across the state. He was booked by federal law enforcement at the site of one of the raids, according to Bill Essayli, the L.A.-based U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California. "David Huerta deliberately obstructed their access by blocking their vehicle," he said on X Friday night. "He was arrested for interfering with federal officers and will face arraignment in federal court on Monday." The labor union said Huerta was released from a hospital Friday afternoon after being transported for unknown reaons. He remained in custody early Friday evening, it said in a statement. The union said he was "exercising his First Amendment right to observe and document law enforcement activity" when he was taken into custody. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass visited Huerta in the hospital and spoke toNBC Los Angelesafterward. "He is doing OK physically, but I know what really impacted him the most was the emotional trauma of watching parents and kids being separated," she said. Among the sites targeted by federal agents was clothing manufacturer, importer and wholesaler Ambiance Apparel in the city's Fashion District, Essayli toldNBC Los Angeles. The agents served a search warrant and were looking for "fictitious employee documents," Essayli said. A representative for Ambiance Apparel could not be immediately reached for comment on Friday. U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., called the ICE action "a continuation of a disturbing pattern of extreme and cruel immigration enforcement." "These indiscriminate raids prove once again that the Trump administration cares about nothing but instilling harm and fear in our communities to drive immigrants into the shadows," Padilla, a Los Angeles native andson of Mexican immigrants, said in a statement. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell and Sheriff Robert Luna were both quick to state that their personnel had no role in the federal action. "Today the LAPD became aware that ICE was conducting operations in the City of Los Angeles," McDonnell said in a statement. "I'm aware that these actions cause anxiety for many Angelenos, so I want to make it clear: the LAPD is not involved in civil immigration enforcement." Video posted to social mediaby People's City Council shows LAPD officers outside the Ambiance Apparel location. The department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Luna acknowledged that raids "have caused fear" but asked residents to "remain calm and peaceful as we continue to place your safety and well-being at the forefront of our efforts." On Friday afternoon multiple immigrant rights' groups rallied in downtown Los Angeles to express anger over the raids and Huerta's arrest. Outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, a federal lockup, federal agents stood guard amid shouting protesters and ultimately fired less-lethal rounds to clear the area in front of the structure, according to NBC Los Angeles video and imagery posted to social media verified by NBC News. Yvonne Wheeler, president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, spoke onstage nearby earlier, decrying the raids as a swipe at working class L.A. "Today was a dark day in Los Angeles," she said. "This administration is cruel and inhumane." Protesters held up signs that said, "Stop Deportations," and some chanted, "Free David, free them all," referring to Huerta and the arrested migrants. A spokesperson for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles estimated 1,000 people had gathered following its call for supporters to join the group downtown. LAPD Officer Drake Madison said it was not yet known how many arrests, if any, had taken place as protesters marched to the complex that includes the detention center and the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building. Los Angles City Council member Ysabel Jurado also took the temporary stage, decrying the raids timing during Pride Month and graduation season. "It was a calculated attempt to take joy from our community," she said. "I'm heartbroken. But I'm ready to fight." She was among the 11 of the city's 15 council members who condemned the federal action. "This indiscriminate targeting of children and families not only harms the individuals who are directly impacted, but destroys our communities' sense of trust and safety in their own homes," the lawmakers said in a joint statement. "We condemn this in no uncertain terms: Los Angeles was built by immigrants and it thrives because of immigrants. We will not abide by fear tactics to support extreme political agendas that aim to stoke fear and spread discord in our city." "I was coming in my driveway and somebody ran up to me," Shepherd, 58, recalls. "I was like, 'Hi.' He's like, 'You're being served.' Then I remember I was at the Essence Festival and somebody came up right before I was supposed to go on stage: 'You're being served.' " Shepherd was married to actor Jeff Tarpley from 2001 to 2010. In 2011, she wed screenwriter Lamar Sally. Theydivorced in 2015. "I was in arbitration going through a divorce and (the lawyers) were just coming at me: 'You have to pay this amount,' " she says. "I was just like, 'I don't have it. I'm not working.I've been let go from 'The View.'I'm unemployed.' " Shepherd refers to herself as "spiritual" but not "religious." Distraught over the proceedings, Shepperd excused herself to use the restroom. In that moment, prayer helped her get through. "A legal secretary put her hand on my shoulder," she says, noting that she began to feel calm. "She started praying. So for me, you touch me and you start praying, I stop whatever I'm doing." Shepherd plays a calming presence in "Straw,"directed and written by Tyler Perry. In the film, Janiyah (Taraji P. Henson) is a single mother dealing with one traumatic event after another, until she finds herself in the middle of a bank robbery. Detective Raymond (Teyana Taylor) can relate to Janiyah's stress in more than one way as she attempts to diffuse the situation. Nicole (Shepherd) is the branch manager of the bank. As she comes to realize Janiyah's struggles, Nicole forms a bond with her that lasts right until the film's finish. "Sisterhood is strong," Shepherd says of the characters' bond. The two "connected through motherhood, that thing that women have, and (Nicole) just wanted to help (Janiyah) win."
