Federal authorities are assisting D.C. police in investigating the shooting death of a21-year-old congressional internwho was killed by a stray bullet in the District, the Metropolitan Police Department said Thursday. The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are helping in the investigation as police search for the suspect who shot Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, of Granby, Massachusetts, on Monday night near the intersection of 7th and M Street. Investigators said they recovered the suspect vehicle and stated that while the shooting was targeted, Tarpinian-Jachym was not among the intended victims. A woman and a 16-year-old boy were also shot in the incident. The woman is in stable condition and the juvenile is believed to have been involved with the group that opened fire, according to police. He remains hospitalized with injuries. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith told reporters on Thursday, "We do have some good video footage, and I say good video footage that's a little grainy, so we're bringing in the FBI to kind of help enhance the video solution so we can see a little bit better." Police told reporters they have recovered the black Acura in a nearby jurisdiction that they were searching for in connection with this shooting. They are also working with the FBI to enhance the video and with the ATF on ballistics analysis. MORE: 4 killed, 14 hurt in Chicago mass shooting: 'Absolute chaos' Smith described the shooting as "a tragedy," and "something that we don't ever want to happen in our city." "We believe that the two groups had an altercation that did not result initially in gunfire. But what we do know is that at the location in the 1200 block of Seventh Street, northwest, is where the exchange of where the gunfire took place," Smith said. She added that D.C. police have not yet recovered a weapon. Tarpinian-Jachym, who had been serving as an intern for Rep. Ron Estes of Kansas since June, was a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he was majoring in finance with a minor in political science.

7-Eleven worker dies after allegedly being attacked by managerNew Foto - 7-Eleven worker dies after allegedly being attacked by manager

A 7-Eleven employee in Los Angeles died after allegedly being attacked by her manager, who authorities are searching for, according to local police and the deceased worker's family. Jessica McLaughlin was found unconscious by Los Angeles police on June 24 after patrol officers received a radio call around 2:15 p.m. regarding a felony battery at the convenience store on Melrose Avenue, according to adepartment news release. McLaughlin, who police said was in her 20s, got into a verbal dispute with another woman inside the 7-Eleven that escalated into a physical altercation, the department stated. Once discovered by police, McLaughlin was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on July 2. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office is in the process of determining McLaughlin's cause and manner of death, police said. More news:Father and son identified as campers found dead at Isle Royale National Park McLaughlin's brother, Sean McLaughlin, created aGoFundMeto cover the costs of his sister's funeral. "Jessica McLaughlin is my sister — but she's so much more than that. She's a daughter, a best friend, and the kind of auntie every kid dreams of having," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "She's been my rock these past five years while we've lived together. She was always there — for me, for our family, and honestly, for anyone who needed her." Sean McLaughlin also described on the GoFundMe page what allegedly transpired on the day of his sister's death, accusing "one of her managers" of "violently and senselessly" attacking her on June 24. The brother alleges his sister's manager "held her down, sat on top of her and didn't let her breathe." "While some coworkers tried to help and stop it, they were attacked too. When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn't breathing," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe about his sister. As McLaughlin's coworkers gave her CPR and called for help, the manager "ran to the back room to try and delete the security footage — and then fled the scene on her bike," the brother wrote. Neither the LAPD nor McLaughlin's brother identified the manager allegedly involved in the incident. "This attack should have never happened," Sean McLaughlin wrote. The GoFundMe created by McLaughlin's brother is nearing its $50,000 goal. As of July 3, it has received over $31,000 in donations. "We're trying to give her the goodbye she deserves," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We want to give her a beautiful service — something that honors who she was and how deeply she was loved." A 7-Eleven spokesperson toldKTLAthat the company was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the suspect has since been fired. USA TODAY contacted 7-Eleven and Sean McLaughlin on Thursday, July 3, but has not received a response. Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams and a new dawn of 'hard launch summer'New Foto - Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams and a new dawn of 'hard launch summer'

We've made it pastblistering heat wavesand landed in July, which can only mean one thing – "hard launch summer" is back in full force. Glastonbury, the British music festival, was ripe with romance this year. Pop singersGracie AbramsandOlivia Rodrigoboth more than hinted at their respective relationship statuses on Instagram with photos from the weekend's festivities. Rodrigo had subtly posted photos of British actorLouis Partridgein previous photo dumps, butnever his face. But towards the end of aGlastonbury recap poston July 2, Rodrigo shared a clip of her dancing on Partridge's shoulders, smiling and singing along toPulp's "Common People." The comment section exploded. "The hard launch I was waiting for I'm so happy," one fan wrote. Abrams also shared a photoof herself dancing on Irish actorPaul Mescal's shoulders over the weekend on her Instagram stories, followed by a selfie in a photo dump on herfeedon July 2. "I'm so happy for two people I don't even know," one fan commented. "Both you and Olivia hard launching on the feed is really special to me," wrote another. So what is the art of the "hard launch"? The term made waves last summer whenTaylor Swift finally posted Travis Kelceon her Instagram feed. Both Abrams and Rodrigo's rumored relationships have also been in the spotlight already. Early kisses caught by paparazzi, gossip circulating social media, songs seemingly written about their partners (have you listened to Rodrigo's "so american"?). But the "hard launch" is about telling the world you're together, on your terms. Therapists say celebrities have myriad reasons for pulling that proverbial trigger. But whether it's a carefully curated moment or an impulsive expression of love, you can't unring that bell. "Every aspect of therelationshipcan become fodder for public consumption and scrutiny, putting a spotlight on the couple and creating pressure to be seen as a healthy match,"Jeff Guenther, licensed professional counselor and author of "Big Dating Energy," previously told USA TODAY. "You're also leaving yourself open to increased criticism." Datingis tricky no matter who you are, especially early on before you decide to start telling people. With celebrities, not only are they opening themselves to scrutiny from their family and friends, but often the whole world. In the beginning stages, it may also seem too good to be true, and shouting your love from the rooftops can feel like jinxing it. Last summer, whenSabrina Carpenterfeatured then-rumored beau, Irish actorBarry Keoghan, in the music video for "Please, Please, Please," the song begged him not to "embarrass" her. We can't speculate how Carpenter feels after that allegedly fizzled, but her newest single, "Manchild," may give listeners a clue. "When we introduce someone as our partner, there is an expectation that we've vetted this person,"Kimberly Vered Shashoua, a licensed clinical social worker, previously told USA TODAY. "It can be embarrassing to have to go back to friends, family and Instagram and update them with abreakup." Think about all the couples, celebrities or otherwise, who never announce a thing. Often, it's a matter of self-preservation. All that said, it's easy to see whycelebritiesmight want to shout about their relationships anyway. They're just like anyone else. It feels good to be in love. "When we feel confident in our partner, it can feel great to show them off," Shashoua said. "It's a lot easier to be honest with our friends and family than sneaking around. If we're active on social media, it can feel strange to have such a big part of your life hidden." Sabrina Carpenter, hookup cultureand why the way we talk about sex is changing People must weigh the benefits and risks of authenticity when publicizing a private relationship. These "depend on what celebrities are getting out of it, the impact on their personal and professional lives and whether their choices are in line with their personality and core values,"Cecille Ahrens, a licensed clinical social worker, previously told USA TODAY. No matter who you are, you give up pieces of yourself during a hard launch. Ahrens adds you may receive "unwanted attention" or face "constant boundary violations." Just ask Abrams, who faced criticism as rumors swirled about her and Mescal's relationship after his apparent breakup from Phoebe Bridgers. But with enough time passed, Abrams' "hard launch" has been met with support. The "hard launch" can even be a business strategy: "By being open about theirrelationships, celebrities can connect more deeply with their fans, boosting theirparasocial relationshipsand most likely leading to more sales or followers," Guenther said. It's a decision that requires care and conversation. But at the end of the day, at least the decision is theirs. Dr. Phil's Cable TV Network Files for Bankruptcy and Sues Christian Broadcaster TBN, Its Former PartnerNew Foto - Dr. Phil's Cable TV Network Files for Bankruptcy and Sues Christian Broadcaster TBN, Its Former Partner

Dr. Phil McGraw's Merit Street Media has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection — and the TV talk-show host's company is suing former partner Trinity Broadcasting Network, alleging breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty. Merit Street filed for bankruptcy and the related lawsuit naming TBN as a defendant with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Texas on Wednesday (July 2). The complaint alleges that TBN, which was Merit Street's broadcast partner, reneged on its obligations and instead "abused its position as the controlling shareholder." As a result, Merit Street claims in the lawsuit, it was forced to "pay or incur obligations to third parties in excess of $100 million." "They were a conscious, intentional pattern of choices made with full awareness that the consequence of which was to sabotage and seal the fate of a new but already nationally acclaimed network." The "most egregious impact is TBN's conscious and knowing choice to cause Merit Street to lose its national distribution by withholding distribution payments despite repeatedly acknowledging those distribution payments were 100% TBN's sole responsibility," Merit Street said in the lawsuit. "Simply put, as a result of TBN's conduct, Merit Street has nowhere to send its broadcast signal and nowhere to air its programming no matter how great it may be." In addition, according to Merit Street's lawsuit, TBN's production services were "comically dysfunctional. Although it promised the equivalent of the professional facilities and services that Dr. Phil had long relied on when producing his show in Los Angeles for CBS, the supposed 'first class' services TBN promised under the Joint Venture Agreement were nothing of the sort. TBN provided screens and teleprompters that blacked out during live shows, an incomplete control room operating out of a truck, an unusable cell phone app for viewers, and amateur video editing software. Merit Street staff often could not even make phone calls in the studio due to poor cell coverage." A copy of the complaint is atthis link. In its bankruptcy filing, Merit Street reported assets and liabilities of between $100 million and $500 million. Reps for TBN did not immediately respond to requests for comment. TBN, based in Forth Worth, Texas, calls itself "the largest Christian Television Network in the world committed to sending the message of hope and grace of Jesus to the world via live streaming." In August 2024, Merit Street laid off 38 employees, more than one-third of its staff, and last month placed an additional 40 staffers on "summer hiatus,"WFAA reported. Dr. Phil rose to fame as a guest on Oprah Winfrey's talk show before launching his own daytime show with the backing of Winfrey's Harpo Productions. He officially launched Merit Street Media in April 2024. At launch, Merit Street's TV network reached more than 80 million homes, with a programming lineup anchored by the "Dr. Phil Primetime" talk show, according to the company. Merit Street describes itself as "a premier multi-platform destination media brand spearheaded by Dr. Phil McGraw, the esteemed best-selling author and award-winning television host." Also named in Merit Street's lawsuit as a defendant is TCT Ministries, another Christian broadcaster. (TCT Ministries did not respond to a request for comment.) TCT TV says it is "your home for inspiring Bible teaching, music, news, specials, and more. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is shared over-the-air, via cable and satellite, and on demand on your favorite devices." The company is based in Marion, Illinois. According to Merit Street's complaint, TBN caused CrossSeed, "a party with whom TBN is closely connected," to make a $25 million loan to Merit Street. CrossSeed's directors include TBN president and CEO Matthew Crouch and former TBN chief business officer Frank Amedia, according to the Merit Street suit. "CrossSeed then assigned that note to another associated party, TCT, on March 5, 2025," Merit Street's complaint says. "TCT perfected the security interest granted pursuant to the note on May 27, 2025. However, the transfer of the security interest to TCT is an avoidable preference because perfection occurred more than 30 days after CrossSeed transferred the note to it and within 90 days of the date Merit Street filed its petition," Merit Street said in the lawsuit. "Moreover, all of TBN and TCT's obligations should be equitably subordinated to Merit Street's other creditors due to TBN's gross misconduct." LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) — Two elderly female tourists in Zambia were killed by an elephant Thursday while on a walking safari in a national park, police said. Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the victims — 68-year-old Easton Janet Taylor from the U.K. and 67-year-old Alison Jean Taylor from New Zealand — were attacked by a female elephant that was with a calf. Safari guides who were with the group attempted to stop the elephant from charging at the women by firing shots at it, police said. The elephant was hit and wounded by the gunshots. The guides were unable to prevent the elephant's attack and both women died at the scene, police said. It happened at the South Luangwa National Park in eastern Zambia, around 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the capital, Lusaka. Female elephants are very protective of their calves and can respond aggressively to what they perceive as threats. Last year, two American touristswere killed in separate encounterswith elephants in different parts of Zambia. In both cases, the tourists were also elderly women andwere on a safari vehiclewhen they were attacked. ___ AP Africa news:https://apnews.com/hub/africa
