According to the memoir by producer Jon Landau — a teaser of which was obtained byMatthew Belloni's What I'm Hearingnewsletter — actress Kate Winslet (who was cast for the role of Rose) "was taken with Matthew, his presence and charm." But McConaughey's accent did not resonate with the film's director, James Cameron, who told the actor, "That's great, now let's try it a different way," according to Landau's book. The part of Jack ultimately went toLeonardo DiCaprioand proved to be a star-making role, though 55-year-old McConaughey's career certainly didn't suffer. The Oscar winner has spoken about his audition for the iconic role in the past, saying onRob Lowe's podcastLiterally! with Rob Lowein 2021: "So I went and read with Kate Winslet, and it was not one of the auditions — they filmed it so it was like into screen test time." "After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me, and when we got outside, they were like, 'That went great.' I mean, kind of, like, hugs. I really thought it was going to happen. It did not," he added. McConaughey also confirmed at the time that he was never offered the role, despite rumors that circulated afterwards. "I asked [director James] Cameron about this, because the gossip over the years that I heard and would see written about me was that I had the role inTitanicand turned it down," McConaughey recalled. By Alasdair Pal SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia's Great Barrier Reef has suffered the largest decline in coral cover in two of its three regions over the last year, research released on Wednesday showed, following a mass bleaching of its corals that was among the worst on record. The Australian Institute of Marine Sciences said the reef has experienced the largest annual decline in coral cover in its northern and southern regions since monitoring began 39 years ago, with coral cover dropping between a quarter and a third after several years of solid growth. "We are now seeing increased volatility in the levels of hard coral cover," said Mike Emslie, head of institute's long term monitoring programme. "This is a phenomenon that emerged over the last 15 years and points to an ecosystem under stress." The reef, the world's largest living ecosystem, stretches for some 2,400 km (1,500 miles) off the coast of the northern state of Queensland. Since 2016, the reef has experienced five summers of mass coral bleaching, when large sections of the reef turn white due to heat stress, putting them at greater risk of death. The 2024 event had the largest footprint ever recorded on the reef, with high to extreme bleaching across all of its three regions, the report said. The Great Barrier Reef is not currently on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites that are in danger, though the UN recommends it should be added. Australia has lobbied for years to keep the reef - which contributes A$6.4 billion ($4.2 billion) to the economy annually - off the endangered list, as it could damage tourism. A surge of flood water tore through a mountainous village in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand Tuesday, leaving at least four people dead and many others missing, officials say. Dramatic video from the Himalayan village of Dharali shows the wall of water, mud and debris tearing down the mountainside and through the village, destroying the homes and businesses in its path. The flooding occurred around 1:45 p.m. local time, according to Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya. At least four people were killed, Arya said. "There are a lot of guest houses, restaurants and hotels there, because of which we immediately requested the army to aid rescue operations," he said. At least 20 people have been rescued and search is underway for the missing, Lt. Col. Manish Shrivastava, a defense spokesperson in Uttarakhand, said shortly after the disaster Tuesday. Dozens of people could be trapped or missing and many homes have been washed away, disaster response officials have said. Authorities are trying to pin down the exact number of people missing or still in need of rescue. Arya said around a dozen hotels were washed away in Tuesday's flood,the Associated Press reported. Arya suggested the flood that devastated Dharali was set off by a sudden bout of heavy rain, also called a cloudburst. "There's a river there and because of the cloudburst, a lot of water came suddenly," Arya said. Cloudbursts can cause extreme rainfall in localized areas and they typically lead to flash flooding. They occur in the foothills of the Himalayas and are triggered in part by the topography — which also makes the flooding more dangerous. The India Meteorological Department defines a cloudburst as having a rainfall rate over 100 mm (4 inches) per hour. Cloudbursts can cause extreme damage and destruction as incredible amounts of water are funneled through the mountains and valleys and into villages in a short period of time. CNN has not confirmed this flooding was caused by a cloudburst. There are other possible causes of an event like this, including glacial lake outbursts, dam failures or sudden releases of water from upstream. Glacial lake outbursts occur when natural ice dams weaken as they melt and collapse, sending sudden, unexpected torrents of water down steep terrain. They are most likely to occur at this time of year. India's Meteorological Department had their highest level of warnings in place for "extremely heavy" rainfall across Uttarakhand. Some portions of the state, which isespecially prone to flooding, received as much as 300 mm (12 inches) in the 24 hours through Tuesday morning. India receives the majority of its annual rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon, which lasts from June through September. Agriculture and livelihoods depend on the heavy summer storms, but the storms can also bring such torrential downpours and flooding that the infrastructure in the region can't handle. The private service was held at the same church where Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, was baptized in 2023. He died after suffering a heart attack July 24 at his home in Clearwater, according to thePinellas County medical examiner. Hogan previously had leukemia and atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, the examiner's report said. His death was declared to be natural. The service was heavily patrolled by church security and Largo police officers, including K-9 dogs. Anyone not on the guest list was turned away near signs that read, "Private Event." President Donald Trumpposted a photo on his Truth Social platform showing him arm wrestling Hogan, saying, "They are having the 'Hulkster's' funeral today, and I thought everybody would enjoy seeing this picture." Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered flags flown at half-staff at all official buildings last Friday, which he declared "Hulk Hogan Day in Florida." Hogan was perhaps thebiggest star in WWE's long history, known for both his larger-than-life personality and his in-ring exploits. He was the main draw for the first WrestleMania in 1985 and was a fixture for years, facing everyone from Andre The Giant and Randy Savage to The Rock and even WWE co-founder Vince McMahon. Hogan was also a celebrity outside the wrestling world, appearing in numerous movies and television shows, including "Hogan Knows Best," a reality show about his life on VH1. Hogan's body will be cremated. His daughter Brooke Bollea Oleksy, better known by her stage name Brooke Hogan, memorialized her father in a recent social media post. "I am so grateful I knew the real version of him. Not just the one the world viewed through a carefully curated lens," she wrote on Instagram.
