People; Laura Luongo/Liaison Madonna and Sean Penn wed in an extravagant ceremony in Malibu in 1985, which was disrupted by swirling helicopters full of photographers The bride wore a custom gown designed by her Like a Virgin tour designer, while Penn wore an off-the-rack Versace suit After the vows, guests ate food from Spago and danced to hits that included Madonna's own song "Into the Groove" Forty years ago, the talk of the town in Hollywood was all aboutMadonnaandSean Penn'swildbeach weddingin Malibu. In August 1985, PEOPLE did a cover story on the Aug. 16 event (Madonna's 27th birthday; Penn had just turned 25), including details about who was there, what the guests ate and what the bride and groom wore. Despite a sea of helicopters overhead, security was tight leading up to the ceremony. At the huge wooden gates at real-estate developer Dan Unger's $6.5 million home, guards oversaw an I.D. check of all who entered, while other security guards armed themselves with infrared binoculars to scan the perimeter for intruders. (They found one interloper, an Italian photographer, who had been hiding in the shrubbery since 1:30 a.m.) Despite the overhead interruptions, the day was still incredibly romantic as 220 friends, family and colleagues joined Madonna's seven brothers and sisters, her 73-year-old grandmother, the groom's family and friends like Rosanna Arquette, Christopher Walken,Carrie Fisher, Andy Warhol, Diane Keaton and Tom Cruise. Barry King/WireImage For the nuptials, guests stood around a poolside setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Shortly before 6:30 p.m., Penn appeared in a double-breasted $695 Gianni Versace suit he had bought off the rack one week earlier on Rodeo Drive. Barry King/WireImage Madonna came out wearing a strapless Cinderella gown created by her"Like a Virgin"tour designer and video image-maker, Marlene Stewart. Her hair was in a classic French twist and covered with a black bowler draped in cream-colored tulle. Though at the time she was known for wearing a stack of bangles on her arms and giant crucifix necklaces, for jewelry, she opted for a single long earring and an antique pearl bracelet. Draped across her dress like a beauty contestant's sash was a silver-and-pink silk metallic net, dripping with encrusted jewels, pearls and dried roses. "We wanted a '50s feeling," designer Stewart would say later, "something Grace Kelly might have worn."Madonna walked down the aisle on the arm of her father to the song "Moments of Love." Actor James Foley was Penn's best man, while Madonna's sister Paula was the maid of honor. The couple exchanged vows in a five-minute ceremony conducted by Judge John Merrick. Penn then lifted his wife's veil and, to the accompaniment of the theme from Chariots of Fire, planted a kiss on her and sparked a standing ovation. AP Photo/Doug Pizac After the vows, waiters rushed out with trays of Cristal champagne and sushi, as Malcolm McLaren's "Madame Butterfly" blared from loudspeakers. Moments later, the newlyweds appeared on a balcony. Penn toasted "the most beautiful woman in the world," and struggled playfully to remove her garter for the obligatory toss. The partygoers then adjourned to a white open-air tent and a feast prepared by Spago restaurant: a five-tier hazelnut wedding cake with sugar flowers, lobster ravioli, rack of lamb, swordfish and baked potatoes stuffed with sour cream and caviar. Table wines included an Acacia Pinot Noir from California's Madonna Vineyard. As evening fell, guests moved to a parquet dance floor set up over the tennis courts and lit with pink floodlights. Disc jockey Terence Toy opened with a swing-era tape, then switched to livelier fare — Motown's greatest dance tunes and Madonna's own "Into the Groove." The bride danced with her usual enthusiasm, even lifting her layered skirt during one fast-moving number to reveal a flowered-brocade slip underneath. At about 10:00 p.m., the get-together began its slow dissolve. "It was all very intimate, except for those obnoxious helicopters," departing Susan Seidelman, director ofDesperately Seeking Susan, told PEOPLE at the time. "A very classy affair," said another guest. "Like Tiffany's with just a dash of flash." DMI/The LIFE Picture Collection/Shutterstock Madonna and Penn's love story had initially surprised plenty of people in the industry. Penn, who'd made a name for himself acting in films likeFast Times at Ridgemont HighandThe Falcon and the Snowman, was notoriously camera-wary and had routinely refused interviews. When he wasn't working, he was usually club hopping with the Brat Packers and actors Timothy Hutton, Emilio Estevez and Cruise. However, when he met Madonna during the taping of her "Material Girl" video, he was smitten. He told his wedding guests that he'd been looking at a book of quotations while hanging with a friend, picked it up and turned to a random page, and read the following: "'She had the innocence of a child and the wit of a man.' I looked at my friend, and he just said, 'Go get her.' The courtship had its rocky moments, but friends at the time said their love was the real deal. "I've never seen two more passionate people. Forget about the superstar stuff; Madonna is a girl wildly in love," a friend of Madonna's told PEOPLE. After the wedding, they had plans to build a spacious estate in Malibu that would be beyond private. The couple divorced in 1989, though Madonna later reflected on her feelings for Penn in her 1991 documentaryTruth or Dare, calling him "The love of her life." They went on to remain good friends. Major Hurricane Kiko Could End Up Near Hawaii Next WeekNew Foto - Major Hurricane Kiko Could End Up Near Hawaii Next Week

While Hurricane Kiko remains roughly 1,500 miles east of the Hawaiian Islands, the storm will be worth watching in the coming days. On Wednesday Kiko rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane from Category 2 intensity in only 6 hours. The storm is moving through a region with warm waters and low wind shear for at least the rest of the week, which means it's staying in conditions that are favorable to hurricanes. Hurricane Kiko is traveling due west, but is forecast to begin turning more west-northwest by Friday or Saturday. While Kiko is expected to begin weakening late this weekend into early next week, the storm will likely maintain hurricane strength at least through then. As of now, it's too early to know what impacts, if any, there will be in the Hawaiian Islands. However, it's important to keep a close eye on the forecast. Most model guidance suggests that there will be some impacts around the middle part of next week as a tropical storm or low-end hurricane. The distance of Kiko's track from the islands will determine its level of impact. If the storm passes closer to the islands, then we could see heavy rainfall, gusty winds and higher surf. Of course, if the storm passes farther away, then the impacts will be less. Even if Kiko makes a close brush with the Hawaiian Islands, some environmental factors could hinder the strength of the storm. Wind Shear:The closer the storm gets to the Hawaiian Islands, the more wind shear it will encounter. This will most likely cause the storm to weaken as it approaches the islands. Sea Surface Temperatures:While ocean temperatures are 80 degrees Fahrenheit along Kiko's track, the water does cool slightly around the islands. This could also help the storm lose some intensity. Dry Air:There will also be a pocket of dry air near the islands as Kiko is making an approach. Dry air also contributes to storms weakening. With several days to go, there is still uncertainty in the track and intensity forecast, so it's important to stay informed and check back frequently for updates on Hurricane Kiko. The Seattle Customs and Border Patrol seized over half a million dollars worth of fakeLabubus, weeks after federal safety regulators warned the public not to buy the counterfeit versions of the toy. Labubus, the popular toy sold by the Chinese retailer Pop Mart which has taken social media by storm, feels nearly impossible to get, but that popularity and scarcity have opened the door for counterfeiters to fill in the void. Nationwide, fake Labubus, alsoknown as Lafufusonline are being sold and CBP in Seattle seized 11,134 Lafufus valued at $513,937.76, Brian Humphre, the director of field operations for the CBP Seattle Field Office, said in an Aug. 29post on X. Last month in California, two notable incidents happened. The first, where police investigated a warehouse robbery in Chino, recovering thousands of dollars worth of Labubus. And in a separate incident in La Puente, burglars were caught on videowiping out a store's entire Labubu collection. Labubu is a doll that resembles a monster, featuring a large head, sharp teeth and prominent eyes. The Labubu keychains everyone is obsessed with are furry and come in different colors, shapes and sizes. Many of the most popularLabubusare sold in blind boxes, which hide the exact content of the package until the customer opens it, sometimes revealing an especially rare item in a series. Pop Mart has sold small Labubus, some shaped like shrimp tempura, carrying Coke products, dressed as pumpkins and more. Some people might say the doll looks a bit scary, while others think it's downright adorable. The doll was designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung roughly a decade ago. But today, Labubus are sold worldwide by the Beijing-based toy maker Pop Mart, as part of their "The Monsters" line. Labubu dolls have become so popular that they've attracted the attention of resellers. To ensure you are purchasing authentic Labubu or "The Monsters" merchandise, purchase the dolls directly from Pop Mart, its TikTok account, Amazon store or other major retailers. Counterfeits have become so widespread that theConsumer Product Safety Commissionhas warned the public to be cautious of lookalike Labubu dolls "that break apart easily, releasing small pieces that can become choking hazards." The following can be signs of a fake Labubu, commonly referred to as "Lafufus," according to theConsumer Safety Alert: Labubus sold online at a steep discount. Packaging does not have a holographic Pop Mart sticker or a scannable QR code linking to the official Pop Mart site. A preview card is not included with your Labubu. The Labubu has the wrong number of teeth. Authentic Labubus have nine teeth. Newer versions of the doll do not have a "subtle UV stamp on one foot." Safety labeling may not be included on the packaging if a toy has small parts. Another indication that a doll might be a Lafufu, according to USA TODAY's research, is that it comes in a resealable plastic bag instead of one that needs to be torn open. Customers will also not be able to choose the color Labubu they receive unless purchasing from a reseller that has already opened the Labubu's packaging. 'Ketamine Queen' pleads guilty in Matthew Perry's overdose deathNew Foto - 'Ketamine Queen' pleads guilty in Matthew Perry's overdose death

The Los Angeles woman known as the "Ketamine Queen" pleaded guilty Wednesday to five federal counts in connection withthe fatal overdoseof "Friends" actor Matthew Perry in 2023, a court spokesman said. Jasveen Sangha, 42, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California to one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, three counts of distribution of ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury. Sangha, a dual citizen of the United States and the U.K. who has been in federal custody since August 2024, faces a maximum prison sentence of 65 years, prosecutors said last month ina news release. She is set to be sentenced on Dec. 10. "She's taking responsibility for her actions," Mark Geragos, Sangha's attorney, said in a brief statement last month after prosecutors announced that she had agreed to plead guilty. Perry was found face down in the heated end of his pool at his Los Angeles home on Oct. 28, 2023. He was 54. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office attributed his death to an accidental overdose of ketamine, a hallucinogenic anesthetic that in recent years has gained popularity as an off-label, unregulated treatment for depression. Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on "Friends," spoke openly about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, chronicling some of those experiences in the 2022 memoir "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing." In his final months, Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety. But he sought unsupervised doses, developing a dependence on the drug that was"spiraling out of control,"leading up to his death, prosecutors have said. The medical examiner's office said the amount of ketamine found in his body was equivalent to the amount used in general anesthesia. Sangha worked with a man named Erik Fleming to give ketamine to Perry, prosecutors have said, citing Sangha's plea agreement. In the month of Perry's death, Sangha and Fleming sold Perry 51 vials of ketamine and provided them to Kenneth Iwamasa, his live-in personal assistant, according to prosecutors. Iwamasa repeatedly injected Perry with the ketamine leading up to the fatal overdose, prosecutors have said — including at least three shots on the day he was found dead. Sangha called Fleming on the encrypted messaging application Signal after having learned from news reports that Perry had died, according to prosecutors. "Delete all our messages," Sangha instructed Fleming. Fleming pleaded guilty in August 2024 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death. Iwamasa pleaded guilty the same month to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death.
