Former interior minister arrested upon arrival in Bolivia after deportation from USNew Foto - Former interior minister arrested upon arrival in Bolivia after deportation from US

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivia's incendiary former interior minister was arrested at the airport Thursday after being deported from the United States to face a litany of charges, including crimes against humanity for ordering a deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters in 2019. The deportation of Arturo Murillo follows his releasefrom U.S. prisonin June after serving four years in amoney laundering casein which he was accused of taking $532,000 in bribes to help a Florida company win alucrative contract to sell tear gasto his government. Late Wednesday he was expelled from Miamion a flight to Bolivia, where he has been tried and sentenced in absentia in two of the many cases against him. In addition to the homicide and crimes against humanity charges, he faces accusations of money laundering, abuse of authority, aggravated theft and influence‐peddling in his purchase of overpriced tear gas to use against protesters. U.S. authorities accompanying Murillo turned him over to their Bolivian counterparts after landing in the eastern province of Santa Cruz. Murillo was promptly whisked on another flight to the capital of La Paz, where prosecutors say they plan to transfer him to the maximum-security Chonchocoro prison. "Murillo must end up in a prison in the city of La Paz," Attorney General Roger Marica told reporters. "It will be up to the judges, but there are already arrest warrants against him." Murillo's prosecution in Bolivia will be a test of the independence of the judiciary in this politically polarized nation, where the Supreme Court last monthordered a review of detention orders against right-wing opposition leadersafter elections brought downthe long-ruling Movement Toward Socialism, or MAS, party. Murillo, 61, served as interior minister under then-interim President Jeanine Áñez, a conservative Christian senator who took power in November 2019 after former president andMAS party founder Evo Moralesresigned under pressure from the military asprotests disputing his reelection to a fourth termshook the country. Judges in Bolivia last week annulleda key case against Áñezand ordered the releaseof her jailed political allies under lenient house arrest arrangements. The series of court decisions reopened wounds from Bolivia's 2019 crisis that left at least 37 people dead and dozens wounded – the vast majority civilians protesting Morales' ouster – after Áñez took power in what many saw as a coup. As interior minister, Murillo referred to his political opponents as "narco-terrorists" and "animals," and led the deadly police crackdown on protests that drew sharp rebuke from human rights groups. The Organization of American States' human rights watchdog reported evidence of "massacres," "systematic torture" and "summary executions" by security forces. During his time in power, Murillo also brought charges against Morales for sedition and terrorism, memorably dangling a pair of handcuffs at a press conference in which he promised to "hunt down" Bolivia's first Indigenous president. On Thursday, it was Murillo in handcuffs as he was escorted to the main investigative police station in La Paz ahead of a court hearing. "He must be held accountable," said Government Minister Roberto Ríos at a press conference.

Teen killed and seven injured in mass stabbing in CanadaNew Foto - Teen killed and seven injured in mass stabbing in Canada

An 18-year-old woman has died and seven other people have been injured in a mass stabbing at a remote indigenous community in Canada, police say. The suspect also died in Thursday's attack at a First Nations community in the province of Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The incident took place in Hollow Water First Nation, about 200km (124 miles) north-east of the city of Winnipeg. Police said the suspect was fleeing the scene when he died in a vehicle collision with an RCMP policewoman, who was critically injured. The family of one victim said he was awoken in the middle of the night, and was stabbed in the torso. Investigators said the woman killed was the sister of the suspect, and that the man was previously "known to police". In a news conference, the federal police force said that officers were on site at the Hollow Water First Nation, and were "still going house to house to make sure that the community is safe and also ensuring that there are no other victims". "Our sincere condolences to everyone within the community of Hollow Water First Nation and to everyone who has been affected by this senseless act of violence," the RCMP said. Police said they were first called to the community at 03:45 local time on Thursday, after a tribal security officer reported an assault had taken place 30 minutes earlier. When police arrived, they were alerted to a second crime scene. Stabbing victims were located at both locations, according to investigators. RCMP major crimes unit Supt Rob Lasson declined to share any suspected motive for the attack, but said the "victims were all known to each other in the community". The suspect, Tyrone Simard, 26, fled in a stolen car and appears to have been heading towards Winnipeg when he collided with the police vehicle. The policewoman, who has not been named, was taken to hospital with "critical but non-life-threatening injuries", according to Lasson, and is expected to make a full recovery. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew praised the police officer, saying: "She stopped a man on a rampage." Chief of Hollow Water First Nation Larry Barker also spoke at the news conference, his voice cracking with emotion. "I ask the community to pray and support one another out there," Chief Barker said. "The families were very close to me, and my deepest condolences to them," he continued. The Anishinaabe community has a population of a few hundred people. One of those injured in the attack was identified by family members as Michael Raven, according toCBC News. His children said that he was stabbed in the lung by someone who broke into his home while he was asleep. "The community is all shaken up from it. It is not something that happens in Hollow Water," his daughter, Christy Williams, told CBC. The attack happened on the third anniversary of a mass stabbing in James Smith Cree Nation and the nearby village of Weldon, in the province of Saskatchewan, in which 11 people were killed and many more injured. The suspect in that stabbing died shortly after police arrested him following a three-day manhunt.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, back again for 'Buffy,' is sick of your reboot takesNew Foto - Sarah Michelle Gellar, back again for 'Buffy,' is sick of your reboot takes

Sarah Michelle Gellarisn't afraid of a little nostalgia. The beloved '90s iconthinks looking back can be a worthwhile exercise. As reboots of popular film franchises and television shows from that era proliferate,Gellartells USA TODAY that she feels "pretty lucky" her work still resonates, all these years later. Gellarinsists that, unlike some other artists, she doesn't feel pigeon-holed by the decade that made her famous. "I've been fortunate enough that I've had work that people remember from all different times, and as an actor, you just hope you do work that not just stands the test of time (and) that people still remember, but they still enjoy," she says. "If your art that you've created is still meaningful and also as the world changes that it still has emotional resonance to the fans, that's all we could ever ask for. Freddie Prinze Jr.,Sarah Michelle Gellar step out at 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' premiere "But I also feel like some people get stuck in that," she adds. "I don't feel like anyone's ever done that to me. It's not like people only know me from one thing in the '90s or they only wanna see me as one thing from the '90s. I've been extremely fortunate." Returning for a reboot of"Buffy The Vampire Slayer"or a cameo in 2025's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" doesn't change that, she says. Nor does her most recent project,a collaboration with eBayfor a pop-up of personally curated throwback items from the decade. "It means that your work resonates," she says of reboots. "And that people are still wanting more from a performance you made that many years ago." Also, with age comes experience,Gellaradds, hinting that her acting is better than ever. Sarah Michelle Gellar can't quitthe '90s – and doesn't think you should either "To get the chance to be able to build on those original performances is pretty lucky," she says. As for the ongoing debate surrounding Hollywood's so-called sequel-mania,Gellaris not too impressed. "I feel like people are really hard on it, but you never get mad every time … someone does a new adaptation of Shakespeare or Brontë or any of the classics," she says. "At the end of the day, there's only so many stories in the world and they all sort of are derivatives. "I think as long as they're good and it's not just a rehashing. As long as the work is put in," she continues, referencing "Freakier Friday" and "Alien: Romulus" as examples of a job well done. "It's all about the DNA. If you can capture the DNA of an original, I think you're golden." This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals her real thoughts on reboots
