Scottie Scheffler winning PGA Tour player of the year was an obvious outcome

For the first time in three years, the PGA Tour did not release the voting percentage when Scottie Scheffler won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the tour's best player. It brings to mind the catchphrase fromhis famous soliloquy this summer at the British Open.

What's the point?

This outcome was as predictable as 10 of the 11 times Tiger Woods won the award. It had all the drama of Scheffler winning a major (he's led by at least four shots walking up to the 18th green in all four of his major wins).

Rory McIlroy produced the biggest moment, for him and for golf, when hewon the Masters for the career Grand Slamin a final round that rivals any of the previous thrillers at Augusta National. It was the best year of his golfing life and he is wholly satisfied with that.

The best golf? Numbers usually tell the most complete stories, and a few of them stand out in Scheffler's astonishing season:

— The final 15 tournaments of the season without finishing worse than a tie for eighth

— 21 consecutive rounds in the 60s

—Two majors

The only time a double major winner was not voted PGA Tour player of the year was Nick Faldo in 1990, the year the award began with players doing the voting. There was a simple explanation for that and it was nothing personal: Faldo wasn't on the ballot because he wasn't a member.

Scheffler won six times this year on tour, twice as many as McIlroy, who at least won the year on emotion and style points.

Of course, the most wins doesn't guarantee the Jack Nicklaus Award. It was only two years ago when Jon Rahm won four times, including the Masters, and Scheffler won the award based on his staggering consistency. There also was that small matter ofRahm defecting to Saudi-funded LIV Golf halfway through the two-week voting period.

The tour said Scheffler won with 38% of the vote in 2023. It did not mention what percentage of the vote Rahm received.

The reason votes were released in percentages was because the tour would rather not disclose how many players — or how few — actually voted.

One snapshot of that was a particularly close race for rookie of the year between McIlroy and Rickie Fowler in 2010. Fowler won the award without having won a tournament. Asked for his reaction the day after the result was announced, Dustin Johnson said, "Man, that's a tough one. I'm not sure who I'm going to vote for." Um, never mind.

There is nothing terribly flashy about Scheffler except the numbers he compiles, whether it's six victories, matching the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record or leading in 17 of the 28 scoring categories the PGA Tour keeps. He finished in the top five in all but five of them.

"Overall the thing that I'm most proud of when I look at the last couple years is just consistency," Scheffler said Monday when he received the Jack Nicklaus Award for the fourth straight time. "It's not very easy to just show up and finish in the top 10 each week."

He makes it look that way. The key to what happens Thursday through Saturday is the dedication to be ready during those days he's not at a tournament.

Scheffler doesn't get too caught up in statistics. He said they confirm what he already feels in his game, what's working and what needs polished. But if there was one he found particularly pleasing it would be leading the tour in scoring average in each of the four rounds.

The last player to do that was Woods in 2000.

Scheffler was paired with Woods in the final round of the 2020 Masters when both were miles out of contention. It was apivotal moment for him, watching Woods— with nothing left to prove in his career — giving each shot his utmost attention.

"I felt like early in my career I wasn't bringing the proper intensity to the first few rounds of the tournament," he said. "It was almost like when the lights came on on the weekend I was better than I was earlier in the week when there almost was lower stakes. A lot of that has just been trying to bring that same intensity to each round and every shot, which is a lot easier said than done."

Scheffler is constantly looking for improvement, and the putter was a big step this year. He ranked 22nd in the key putting statistic, down from 77th a year ago. Most pleasing was going from 139th in 2024 to 33rd this year in putting inside 10 feet.

He led the tour in 16 main statistics, 11 of those involving scoring. That makes sense for someone who won the Byron Nelson Award for the lowest adjusted scoring average at 68.131. That was nearly three shots better than the tour average, and nearly a full shot lower than McIlroy.

And to think the year started with stitches in his right hand after slicing it open with a wine glass because that was all Scheffler could find to cut ravioli for Christmas dinner.

"I think he made enough money to hire a chef," McIlroy jokingly said when Scheffler returned from his injury at Pebble Beach in February.

Maybe it's a good thing Scheffler didn't, and McIlroy suggested as much after the British Open when he said, "I also had the three wins when Scottie wasn't quite on his game."

McIlroy won at Pebble Beach and The Players Championship, two big stages. Throw in the Irish Open, another title as Europe's No. 1 player and another road Ryder Cup victory. It was a big year, one McIlroy wouldn't trade for any award.

The best year? The answer was easy even without revealing the vote.

Troy Aikman rips Dolphins for 'ridiculous' fourth quarter vs Steelers

Troy Aikman ripped theMiami Dolphinsfor what he referred to as a "ridiculous" fourth quarter plan during the team's 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on "Monday Night Football" in Week 15.

Aikman's comments came just before the 2-minute warning, when Miami sackedAaron Rodgersand used its final timeout to guarantee itself one more possession.

"I'm flabbergasted by what we've witnessed here in this fourth quarter with the Dolphins," Aikman said on ESPN's broadcast of the game. "And now they want to call timeouts. It just is about as ridiculous a fourth quarter as I've seen in a long time."

<p style=Week 1: Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) makes a catch for a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field. The play was originally ruled an incomplete pass, but the call was overturned. Despite TeSlaa's effort, the Packers won the game 27-13.

It was a rough Giants debut for Wilson (17 of 37 passing for 168 yards) as the Commanders won the game, 21-6. Aikman later clarified his criticism stemmed from Miami's clock management strategy and lack of urgency during the game's final frame.

The Dolphins trailed 28-3 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Despite this, the team orchestrated two methodical drives during which the offense repeatedly huddled and declined to operate with any sort of hurry-up attack to maximize the time remaining in the game.

That baffled Aikman, especially once the Dolphins – who were facing elimination from the playoff race with a loss – tried to kick the offense into high-gear trailing by two possessions with just a couple of minutes remaining in regulation.

"This is just a bizarre last few series," Aikman opined. "They don't go hurry-up. Now they're going hurry-up and calling timeouts. It's just, it's hard to understand exactly what the philosophy or what they're trying to do."

Ben Roethlisberger walks back 'clean house' comments, says Mike Tomlin has earned right to decide his future

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has found himself in an unusual position this season. Despite the team being 8-6 and leading the AFC North, Steelers fans have called for Tomlin's job.

That fervor reached a point where one of the Steelers' recent icons and a former player whom Tomlin coached even seemed on board with the idea. Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger seemed to be on board with Tomlin's exit after Week 13. On his podcast, Roethlisberger said, "Maybe it's a clean-house time." He said he respected Tomlin, but that the move might be "best for him, too."

When asked about those comments Monday ahead of his Steelers Hall of Fame induction, Roethlisberger attempted to walk them back, saying Tomlin should decidewhether he wants to move on, per Brooke Pryor of ESPN.

"Just because I said there's a time for some new things, that's just saying that I think Coach Tomlin — if he wants to move on, he has every right to move on, it's not they should," Roethlisberger said Monday night before the Steelers' 28-15 win over the Miami Dolphins. "It's up to him, and he's earned that right. If he wants to do something else, he can and he should and we should honor him whenever that time comes. Maybe he wants to coach here for another 10 years, that's fine too."

Roethlisberger made those comments before theSteelers picked up a 28-15 winover the Miami Dolphins on Monday night. With the victory, the Steelers (8-6) retained their lead on the AFC North and sit in the No. 4 seed in the postseason. After Week 15, the teamhas a 61 percent chance of making the playoffs, per NFL.com.

Getting into the postseason hasn't been the main issue in Pittsburgh. Tomlin has famously never posted a season below .500, and has made the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons. But success in the postseason has been spotty in recent years. Since 2017, the Steelers are 0-5 in playoff games. While the team has typically posted strong defenses during that stretch, its offenses have generally left a lot to be desired, and that's been exposed in the postseason.

Longtime NFL veteran Aaron Rodgers was supposed to change that this season. Rodgers isn't in his prime anymore, but has made a positive impact on the team's offense. The Steelers rank 13th in points scored this season and are averaging nearly two more points per game compared to last season. That's not a major upgrade, but it has made a difference.

None of that will matter if the Steelers experience yet another early exit in the playoffs. Despite Tomlin's success, frustration seems to have hit a high point among fans — and maybe even some former players.

There's no indication Tomlin wants to leave, or that he would be fired if the team washes out of the playoffs early, but the fact that there's even chatter about the possibility speaks to things being different in Pittsburgh this year ... even if the team is headed for a similar result.

Colombia says ELN rebels killed 2 police officers as they protest US military build up

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) —Colombianpolice said Tuesday that two officers were killed in the southwestern city of Cali in an attack by the National Liberation Army, a rebel group that stepped up attacks against the government this week.

Police said the officers were patrolling a neighborhood on motorcycles when they were hit by a roadside bomb. The officers were taken to a nearby hospital but did not survive their injuries.

The National Liberation Army, also known by its Spanish acronym ELN, launched a 72-hour "armed strike" on Sunday to protest the U.S. military build up in the Caribbean.

During these armed strikes, schools and businesses are forced to close in areas under the group's control, while the rebels step up attacks against government targets.

The ELN has not claimed responsibility for the attack in Cali.

On Monday, Colombia's human rights ombudswoman said the group had attacked a police station and a military base over the weekend, as it launched its armed strike. Those attacks were launched in provinces along Colombia's border with Venezuela and resulted in the death of an ambulance driver.

Colombia's government has been critical of the Trump administration's efforts to pressure Venezuelan PresidentNicolas Maduro, including the deployment of U.S. warships, and fighter jets to areas near Venezuela's coast.

Last week, PresidentGustavo Petrodescribed the Trump administrations'seizure of a sanctioned oil tankeroff Venezuela's coast as an act of "piracy."

But Colombian officialsalso said Mondaythat the ELN's protest against U.S. intervention "lacks any sense whatsoever" because it is targeting rural and urban communities within Colombia.

The ELN is a Marxist group inspired by the Cuban revolution and the group has an estimated 6,000 fighters in Venezuela and Colombia.

The ELN has been accused of running illegal mines and drug trafficking routes in both countries and supports Venezuela's de facto leader Maduro.

Petro, who was a member of another rebel group in his youth, has attempted to stage peace talks with the ELN, but negotiationswere suspended in Januaryafter the group waged a series of attacks on villages in Colombia's Catatumbo region that displacedmore than 50,000 people.

Petro has accused the ELN of abandoning its revolutionary ideals and recently called it a group of "drug traffickers dressed up as guerrillas."

NEED TO KNOW

  • A Nov. 15 news release from the FDA revealed they had sent warning letters to "several major retailers for failing to remove recalled ByHeart infant formula from their store shelves despite being notified of the recall" of the product

  • The FDA shared on Nov. 8 that they were recalling ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula had been recalled after being linked to several cases of infant botulism

  • On Nov. 11 the recall was expanded to include all ByHeart products

Warning letters have been sent out to four major retailers, including Walmart and Target, after an infant formula was reportedly found on shelves despite it being recalled.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a Nov. 8news releasethat ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula had been recalled after being linked to several cases of infant botulism,PEOPLE previously reported.

The recall was then expanded to include all ByHeart formula products, including all unexpired formula cans and single-serve "anywhere pack" sticks, on Nov. 11, per warning letters sent by the FDA toWalmart, Inc.,Target Corporation,The Albertsons Companies IncorporatedandThe Kroger Company, which were dated Dec. 12. The letters noted that the retailers had been notified in writing about the recall on Nov. 11.

TheFDA had previously saidin an update on Nov. 20 of the outbreak, "Epidemiologic and laboratory data show that ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula might be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, [the bacteria that causes botulism] which is causing infant illness in multiple regions of the country."

In aDec. 10 post, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that as of that date, a total of 51 sick infants from 19 states had been hospitalized amid the outbreak, per a news release. No deaths have been reported.

According to the CDC, "Infant botulism happens when a baby swallows Clostridium botulinum spores that grow in the gut and make toxin."

"Infant botulism often starts with constipation but is usually first noticed as difficulty feeding (sucking and swallowing), a weak and altered cry, and lack of head control," it added.

The FDA noted in a Dec. 15news releasethat warning letters had been sent out last week "to several major retailers for failing to remove recalled ByHeart infant formula from their store shelves despite being notified of the recall."

"These warning letters highlight a concerning problem with recall effectiveness at the retail level," the release added.

The FDA said, "In the weeks following the manufacturer's voluntary recall of ByHeart infant formula products, FDA investigators and state and local partners checked retail stores across the U.S. over 4,000 times to ensure recalled product was not being made available to consumers."

"Through this effort, we found that recalled infant formula continued to be found on store shelves—for over three weeks in one case, in over 175 locations across 36 states," the release continued.

"These warning letters highlight the critical responsibility that retailers have in effectuating a recall, particularly when dealing with products that pose serious health risks to our most vulnerable populations, such as infants," it said.

The warning letters noted that the infants affected ranged from 16 to 264 days of age, with each individual letter noting the dates that the products had been found in the stores after the recall.

The letter to Walmart stated that the products had been found on shelves in stores across 21 states after the recall from Nov. 12 to Nov. 26, while the formula was found in Albertsons stores in 11 states from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19, and at Kroger stores in 10 states from Nov. 12 to Nov. 19.

FDA A photo of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula

Meanwhile, the letter to Target stated that the formula had remained available for purchase on shelves in stores across 20 states from Nov. 12 to Nov. 20, "well after the recall was initiated and subsequently expanded."

"During a recall audit check by an FDA investigator on November 17, 2025, our investigator was informed of a can of the recalled ByHeart infant formula being sold from a New Hampshire Target store on November 16, 2025," the letter included.

The letter also noted that Arkansas state partners had "observed ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula single-serve 'anywhere pack' sticks on a Target store shelf with promotional 'Sale!' signage offering a $2.00 discount on the recalled formula from November 16 to November 22, 2025."

The letters sent last week suggested that all four retailers had failed to provide the FDA "with any information demonstrating that corrective actions to effectuate this recall have been implemented throughout your organization to prevent adulterated food from being received in interstate commerce and subsequently offered for sale."

The companies have 15 working days to respond to the letters.

A Walmart spokesperson said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, "The health and safety of our customers and members is always a top priority. When notified of the recall, we moved swiftly to issue a sales restriction and removed this product from our impacted stores and clubs and online. We take all reports of inaction seriously and will respond to the letter."

Meanwhile, Albertsons Companies shared in a statement to PEOPLE that they "are committed to the health and safety of our customers."

"We have procedures to address product recalls, including working closely with suppliers and regulators to identify and remove affected items and communicate guidance to customers. ByHeart infant formula products have been removed from our store shelves," the statement added,

Mia Funt, Co‑Founder and President of ByHeart, said in astatement, "The safety and well‑being of every infant who uses our formula is, and always will be, our highest priority."

"This nationwide recall reflects our commitment to protecting babies and giving families clear, actionable information. Alongside this recall, we are conducting a comprehensive investigation to do our part to get the answers parents expect and deserve," Funt added, per a Nov. 11 news release.

ByHeart added in a further statement obtained by PEOPLE that the "investigations into the root cause of the outbreak remain ongoing."

"As part of our commitment to identifying a root cause, we have continued to conduct third-party lab testing of ByHeart formula samples. As of the latest update, lab tests have identified Clostridium botulinum in select samples of our formula," the statement added.

It continued, "The investigation includes a rigorous audit of every step of our product development chain, from suppliers and raw ingredients, through to packaging and transportation. We have shared our findings with FDA and are continuing to work with regulators to understand how this bacterium entered the food supply."

The company insisted it had "notified all retail partners to remove all ByHeart formula from their shelves," adding, "After the initial two batch recall on November 8, 2025, ByHeart notified retailer partners multiple times, and we have confirmed communication has been sent to stores. FDA also shared notifications with retailers."

Urging parents and caregivers to "stop using all ByHeart formula immediately" and to "monitor your child for symptoms of infant botulism, and seek medical care immediately if they develop symptoms," the company concluded, "Our hope is that the findings of these investigations lead to solutions for our own processes and the infant formula industry at-large."

Target Corporation and The Kroger Company didn't immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for comment.
