"Play these last three games, enjoy them with your teammates, enjoy them with your coaches... and then let it sink in. It'll come to you with time. There are so many emotions with this game right after a season, especially with the way this one's been," he continued, referencing Kansas City Chiefs quarterbackPatrick Mahomes'season-ending injuryon Sunday, and that their loss to the Los Angeles Chargers officially knocked the team out of the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons.

Mikaela Shiffrin leads 1st run of night slalom as rivals falter under the lights

COURCHEVEL, France (AP) —Mikaela Shiffrinis on course to remain perfect in slalom during theOlympic seasonafter several of her top challengers faltered under the lights during the opening run of a World Cup night race Tuesday.

The American holder of a record 104 World Cup victories stood 0.83 seconds ahead of Swiss skier Camille Rast and 1.16 ahead of German racer Lena Duerr.

Shiffrin won the opening three slaloms of the season and has won four straight going back to last season.

Lara Colturi, the Italian-born skier who races for Albania, straddled a gate toward the end of her run — ending a streak of three consecutive slalom podiums.

Swiss veteran Wendy Holdener placed eighth but then hit a hole in the finish area, got flipped up into the air and landed on her back. After grimacing in pain for a few moments, she got up and walked away. It wasn't immediately clear if she was injured.

Defending World Cup slalom champion Zrinka Ljutic and Olympic silver medalist Katharina Liensberger, the next two starters, went out midway down.

It's the third straight slalom that Ljutic has failed to finish.

Lindsey Vonn, who won a downhill last week at age 41, no longer competes in slalom.

Vonn will be back in action this weekend for a downhill and a super-G in nearby Val d'Isere.

Women's Alpine skiing at the Feb. 6-22 Milan Cortina Winter Games will be held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Tom Brady shared what advice he'd give Patrick Mahomes following the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback's ACL injury

  • Mahomes tore the ACL in his left knee during the final minutes of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers

  • Brady said he'd tell Mahomes: "You got to get through rehab mode as fast as possible"

Tom Bradyis offering up advice toPatrick Mahomes, after the Kansas City Chiefs announced the quarterback hadsuccessful knee surgeryon his torn ACL.

Brady, who tore his ACL in the opening game of the 2008 NFL season and later came back to win four more Super Bowls, said on theLet's Go!podcaston Monday, Dec. 15 that Mahomes' injury is "a tough" one but he knows the Chiefs quarterback is "very resilient.""He's going to work extremely hard to get back," Brady, 48, told host Jim Gray.

Asked what he'd tell Mahomes if he could speak with the injured quarterback, Brady said he'd tell the 30-year-old quarterback to remember that "this is part of what my career is going to be" and that "other people have gone through it."

"You've just got to put as much diligence into the rehab process," Brady said. "I always feel like the faster you rehab, the faster you can get back to practicing the sport that you know you love. I think sometimes people will pace themselves. Instead of training mode, they're in rehab mode. I think you got to get through rehab mode as fast as possible, and then you get back to training mode."

Brady added that rehabbing that way "requires an all-out commitment."

"It's the same commitment that the great professional athletes make to be great at their profession," the retired quarterback-turned-broadcaster said. "When you go through the rehab process, you need that same level of focus and determination. It's a tough rehab. It's one of the toughest rehabs."

Mahomes injured his left knee during the final minutes of Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers as the Chiefs were attempting to complete a season-saving drive, down 16-13. A replay shown on the CBS broadcast appeared to show the two-time NFL MVP's left leg pop in a manner that's often associated with torn ligaments in the knee. Mahomes remained down for several minutes before being helped off the field, as the Chiefs went on to lose the game, officially eliminating them from the NFL playoffs for the first time in more than a decade.

"There have been some pretty good quarterbacks who have had the same injury, and they've done pretty well after they came back," head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday. "He'll get after it, and he's got good people here to rehab him. He'll be right on top of all of that."

In Brady's case, the seven-time Super Bowl champion missed the entirety of the 2008 NFL season but successfully returned by the start of the 2009 season and led the New England Patriots back to the playoffs. Brady said this week on theLet's Go!podcast that he never feared his career was over following his ACL injury, but admitted the rehab process was "tough."

To this day, Brady said effects of the injury still linger: "My [left] knee, it doesn't feel like my right knee, the one that didn't get injured, so there's always a little reminder in my left knee."

"I just remember, every day, pushing myself," Brady said about his recovery. "It's always the same amount of pain and discomfort, except you're making progress through that pain and discomfort, which is a hard psychological thing to battle. You feel like, god, every day it doesn't feel right except you're gaining range of motion and you're gaining strength and you're on the road to recovery."

Mahomesaddressed the injury in a social media postlate Sunday night, vowing to come back "stronger than ever.""Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie, it hurts," Mahomeswrote. "But all we can do now is trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you, Chiefs kingdom, for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I will be back stronger than ever ⏰."

Woman's phone found over 2 years after she vanished in wilderness

A missing woman's phone was found in Australia's Tasmanian wilderness over the weekend, more than two years after she disappeared, police said.

An independent search party organized by Celine Cremer's friends and family found her phone on Saturday at a waterfall, Tasmania Policesaid in a statement. It was the first sign of Cremer ever located in the area where she went missing, aside from her car, which investigators discovered 10 days after the last confirmed sighting of her in Waratah, a town in the Australian island state of Tasmania.

Tasmania Police said the phone will undergo further forensic examination and that they will now formally join the independent search for Cremer.

Cremer, a Belgian woman, was last seen on June 17, 2023, in Waratah, according to police. Investigators believe that Cremer drove to Philosopher Falls, a waterfall surrounded by dense rainforest, and intended to set out for a short walk through the area.

"Unfortunately, she did not return," Tasmania Police inspector Andrew Hanson said in a statement.

Her friends reported her disappearance to Tasmania Police on June 26, 2023, and the original search effort began the next day, police said.

By then, the area had already experienced an intense spell of winter weather, including subzero temperatures, snow and rainfall. According to Hanson, medical experts at the time advised police that Cremer could not have survived so many days in the wilderness under those conditions.

The initial search continued for two weeks, with no clues as to where Cremer might be, and follow-up searches over the years ended similarly. The recent discovery of Cremer's phone suggests that she may have veered off course during her walk around Philosopher Falls and lost her way.

"The phone was found in an area that has been extensively searched previously and phone data, as well as the location it was found, supports our theory that Celine may have, using an app on her phone, elected to leave the Philosopher Falls track to take more a direct route back to her car as daylight faded," said Hanson, adding: "We suspect she dropped her phone and continued without it, becoming disoriented in dense terrain."

A bout of harsh winter weather over the weekend postponed further search efforts, according to Tasmania Police, but Hanson said they planned to dispatch officers to the area as soon as those conditions cleared up.

Police said that while they were not leading or coordinating the search that led to the phone's discovery, they "had been supporting the effort by sharing information and advice about what to do should anything be discovered."

The independent group of searchers included Cremer's friends and the adventure filmmaker Rob Parsons, who has posted videos of his own private attempts to search for Cremer on YouTube. He described the moment Cremer's phone was discovered in an interview with theAustralian Broadcasting Corporation.

"I don't think there was a dry eye in the area," Parsons told the news organization. "Everyone was so emotional. Everything was building up to this point where her friends could be here for the discovery. It felt like it was meant to be."
