Former Cal State Bakersfield player, assistant coach Kevin Mays awaiting trial on pimping, human trafficking, other charges: Report

Kevin Mays, a former Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball player and temporary assistant coach, is awaiting trial on pimping and several other charges,ESPN's Shwetha Surendran reported on Thursday.

Mays, 32 years old when he was arrested this past September, is in jail and reportedly being held without bail. His preliminary hearing is set for March 13, according to ESPN's report, which unpacks the rap sheet of 11 criminal and misdemeanor charges he's facing.

In addition to human trafficking, Mays has been charged with possession of automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines, possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to sell, and possession of more than 600 images of youth or child pornography, some of which depicted kids as young as 4, per ESPN.

Mays has pleaded not guilty on all charges.

Now-former longtime CSUB men's basketball head coach Rod Barnes coached Mays from 2014-16. In Mays' second and final season with the Roadrunners, he helped the program reach its first and only Division I NCAA tournament.

In 2019, he reportedly applied to become a player-development coordinator at CSUB. He got that position and then, this past June, took a job as a temporary assistant coach under Barnes. In Mays' new role, he was making a salary of just over $3,000 per month, according to ESPN's report, which cited school records.

Barnes reportedly received a tip in late August from an anonymous email sender, who alleged that Mays was working as a pimp in Las Vegas, Oregon, Washington and California.

In that same email, the tipster identified an alleged victim, whom Mays had allegedly trafficked for several months, and whom the Bakersfield Police Department later determined was 23 years old, per ESPN.

The alleged victim was not part of CSUB's staff or student body, according to ESPN, which cited Kern County court records and university police.

"FIX IT OR THE WHOLE STAFF WILL FALL," the tipster wrote to Barnes in an email the sender described as a "first warning and a final warning," according to ESPN.

Barnes forwarded that email to CSUB's human resources office, leading to the investigation that uncovered Mays' nefarious activity.

The school announced in September that Barnes, reportedly shocked by Mays' alleged pimping, and then-athletic director Kyle Conder would no longer be occupying their roles.

Conder sued CSUB for what he claims is retaliation for whistleblowing, per ESPN, which reported Conder said he tried to warn the administration about "potential crimes and misconduct" at the university.

That said, according to ESPN's report, in a separate lawsuit from two anonymous softball players — who sued the school and a softball coach accused of harassment, illegal weapons transactions and more — Conder is alleged to have displayed "a pattern ... of failing to respond when receiving complaints against Coach Mays."

A subsequent email from the tipster reportedly informed the police that Mays' alleged victim had been arrested on a DUI charge in a car Mays had provided her.

ESPN's report, referencing an ensuing police investigation, details that Mays used a CSUB account to rent that car, which the alleged victim used for her sex work.

After carrying out a sting operation, Sacramento police reportedly interviewed the alleged victim, who identified Mays as her "boyfriend," but police detected text messages between them that exhibited Mays' "involvement and control" over her sex work.

Penguins' Malkin given major penalty for slashing Sabres defenseman Dahlin

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin was given a major penalty for slashing Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin early in the second period of a 5-1 loss Thursday night.

Associated Press

Malkin was ejected from the game with the major penalty, and both players were called for cross-checking at 38 seconds of the period.

Penguins coach Dan Muse didn't comment on Malkin's penalty after the game.

"He's obviously a catalyst for our team," said Bryan Rust, who scored Pittsburgh's only goal. "He drives a lot of play and creates a lot of offense. He's an unbelievable player, so it's unfortunate."

Josh Norris scored on the power play at 4:10 to give the Sabres a 2-1 lead. Alex Tuch added a short-handed goal at 6:18, and Owen Power made it 4-1 with 9:30 to go in the period.

The 39-year-old Malkin has been suspended twice in his NHL career, one game for high-sticking Philadelphia's Michael Raffl in February 2019, and four games in April 2022 for cross-checking Nashville's Mark Borowiecki.

"Hopefully, he served his time (Thursday) and that's it," defenseman Erik Karlsson said. "He's a big part of this team. He's been playing great hockey and gives us a different dimension to our offensive game."

Malkin's 10-game home points streak ended Thursday. He has 13 goals and 47 points in 46 games.

Pittsburgh is already without captain Sidney Crosby for a minimum of four weeks because of a lower-body injury.

"I think we've shown throughout the year that we're a pretty deep team," Karlsson said. "We miss both of those guys, but it's nothing that we haven't done before."

Haitian man dies in ICE custody after family says tooth infection went untreated

Scripps News is gathering details about the death of another immigrant in ICE custody — a 56-year-old Haitian man who died after suffering from a tooth infection. His family is blaming a lack of medical care.

Scripps News

Emmanuel Damas had been detained since September at a private, for-profit ICE facility in Florence, Arizona. His brother, Presly Nelson, told the Scripps News Group in Phoenix that Damas had been suffering for weeks from an infected tooth.

Nelson said medical staff gave Damas ibuprofen rather than sending him to a dentist. Days later, Damas was rushed to the hospital, where his condition deteriorated. The family said the infection had spread, and he was placed on a ventilator before he ultimately died.

"The nurse said 'yeah, most likely he had a tooth infection and he did not get the proper attention,'" Nelson said. "That had spread to his neck then to his lungs and he went septic."

"All you have to do is get a driver and a security guard or two security guards to actually take him to a dentist," Presly added, saying his brother's death was preventable.

The family is now demanding an investigation. The Department of Homeland Security has not immediately responded to questions about this case.

Scripps News' yearlong ICE Inc. investigative series has found that as ICE detains more undocumented immigrants, there has been a rise in complaints about inadequate health care and an increase in deaths of migrants in ICE custody. Clickhereto learn more.

UN human rights chief to travel to Washington amid concerns over Middle East crisis

GENEVA, March 6 (Reuters) - The United Nations human rights chief will travel ‌to Washington this month, he said ‌on Friday, but expressed doubt he could influence the development of the Middle East crisis amid mounting concerns.

Reuters

"I hope to go to Washington D.C. later this month, and we will ‌see what this will bring," UN human rights chief Volker Turk told reporters in Geneva.

"We have obviously been in touch, but to be honest, I don't think it's in any way meaningful in terms of ‌influencing the current trajectory," he added.

Turk urged international actors to rapidly de-escalate the regional conflict, now into its seventh day after U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

Israel said on Friday ‌it launched "broad-scale" air strikes on Iran's infrastructure. It also continued strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs, ‌which are under an evacuation order.

Large booms rang out across Tel Aviv and other parts of Israel as Israeli defence systems attempted ‌to intercept an Iranian rocket volley on Friday morning.

Did Clayton Kershaw retire? Why ex-Dodgers LHP is in World Baseball Classic

In 18 seasons with theLos Angeles Dodgers,Clayton Kershawput together a rather impressive career that likely will make him a first-ballot Hall of Famer, all while quickly becoming one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of his generation.

USA TODAY Sports

It's a lengthy list of accomplishments that includes three National League Cy Young Awards, three World Series rings and 11 All-Star Game selections. He is also justone of 20 pitchersinMajor League Baseballhistory to reach the 3,000 career strikeout mark, a feathe accomplished in July of last year.

He now looks to add another accolade to his Hall of Fame plaque:World Baseball Classicchampionwith Team USA.

WBC POWER RANKINGS:Which teams have best odds to win?

"I'm so excited to be here and be with this group. ... I Amazon'd all my gear. I'm ready, dude," Kershaw jokinglysaid on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show"on Monday, March 2. "I've been ready for a long time. I'm just so fired up to be on this team. And I told them, D-Ro (Mark DeRosa) and Andy Pettitte, our pitching guy, 'Whatever you guys want. I'll throw zero. I'll throw every game. It doesn't matter. I'm done after this. I'll do whatever you want.'"

But if Kershaw is retired from The Show, why is he playing in the WBC for Team USA?

Here's what to know about Kershaw:

Is Clayton Kershaw retired?

Yes, Kershaw is recently retired. The WBC is going to be the final competition that Kershaw will pitch in.

He announced his intention to retireafter 18 seasons in Dodger Blue on Thursday, Sept. 18 at a news conference inside Dodger Stadium.

"I'm at peace with it and I think it's the right time," Kershaw said. "It's been a fun year and such a blast. I can't think of a better season to go out, but we have a lot to accomplish."

Much like how Peyton Manning went off into the sunset afterwinning Super Bowl 50with theDenver Broncos,Kershaw had a Hollywood ending, as the Dodgers defeated theToronto Blue Jaysin extra innings ofGame 7 of the World Series."It's not a sad feeling. It really isn't," Kershaw said followingGame 7 of the 2025 World Series. "I will, forever, for the rest of my life, get to say, we won Game 7 of the World Series the last game I played. You can't script it, you can't write it up.

"Even if I was not throwing 88, I'd still be done. It's just the perfect way to end it."

Is Clayton Kershaw playing in WBC?

Yes, the former Dodgers left-hander is competing in the WBC. It's the first time that Kershaw is playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, which is in its sixth iteration.

He is expected to come out of the bullpen for Team USA.

Why is Clayton Kershaw playing for Team USA in WBC?

In his appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" on March 2, the three-time World Series champion called being in the WBC and wearing the Team USA jersey a "bucket list" thing for him as a ballplayer.

"I've tried to be on this team a few different times and it hadn't worked out for numerous reasons. But now that I finally get to do it and represent the USA and get to play baseball, it's an amazing thing," Kershaw said. "We were all watching the Winter Olympics and seeing the (men's and women's) hockey teams win and just to kind of see the nation support them and be behind them, it was amazing.

"To get to do that in a baseball uniform for Team USA is a bucket list thing for me. I'm so grateful to get to be on the team, and it's going to be a blast."

Having the veteran southpaw on the roster was an important one for Team USA manager Mark DeRosa. His presence is perhaps even more important for Team USA heading into Pool C play in Houston, as back-to-back AL Cy Young winnerTarik Skubal is expected to make just one startbefore returning to the Grapefruit League with theDetroit Tigers, andNew York Metspitcher Nolan McLean is dealing with an illness that stopped him from reporting to Team USA's camp in Arizona with everyone else.

"He was important to me," DeRosa said of Kershaw's roster spot, according to MLB.com."The way the tournament is set up, if a starter was to falter and not be able to give you length … you needed kind of a break-glass-in-[case-of]-emergency kind of pitcher. There's no one on an active roster that's willing to come and sit here and maybe not get to pitch. When we put our heads together, he was one of the best to ever do it, the guys would want to be around him, learn from him, and in case of emergency, he'd be out there and kind of reset us."

Clayton Kershaw stats

  • 223-96 career record in 2,855 ⅓ innings with a career 2.53 ERA

  • 3,052 strikeouts

  • 3-time World Series winner (2020, 2024, 2025)

  • 2014 National League MVP

  • 3-time NL Cy Young Winner (2011, 2013, 2014)
