US Department of Homeland Security says Lewandowski has left after Noem's firing

March 28 (Reuters) - Corey Lewandowski, who was an aide to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, no ‌longer works at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ‌a spokesperson for the agency said on Saturday.

Lewandowski "no longer has a role at DHS," the DHS spokesperson said, without providing further details. Lewandowski had been an unpaid adviser to Noem. He previously served as President Donald Trump's campaign manager in the 2016 election.

Lewandowski did not respond to ‌a request for comment. The department's confirmation of his departure was first reported by Politico.

Trump fired Noem earlier this month, saying she would become special envoy to a new "Shield of the Americas" initiative to promote his security policies in the Western Hemisphere. Noem has since been replaced as the head of DHS by former U.S. Senator ‌Markwayne Mullin, whom the Senate confirmed on Tuesday.

The close relationship between Lewandowski and Noem drew scrutiny. At a congressional hearing earlier this month, a Democratic lawmaker asked Noem directly whether she had a sexual relationship with Lewandowski — a question Noem dismissed as "tabloid garbage."

Lewandowski ‌appeared with Noem in photos released on Wednesday by the U.S. embassy in Guyana, which showed him by her side in meetings with Guyana's President Irfaan ‌Ali.

Noem, in her new role, reports to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. A State Department official earlier this week declined to explain to Reuters why Lewandowski was on the trip with ‌Noem but said he would not be joining the department in any capacity.

DHS says Corey Lewandowski left department following Noem's ouster

"Mr. Lewandowski no longer has a role at DHS," a department spokesperson said Saturday amid questions about whether Lewandowski would be leaving the agency, where he was serving as a special government employee.

Politicowas the firstto report the news of Lewandowski's departure.

President Donald Trumpfired Noemearlier this month after she'd served for a year in the agency's top role.

Former Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., was sworn in asher replacementearlier this week.

Noem's firing came amid mounting scrutiny of Noem on several fronts, including over her relationship with Lewandowski and his role overseeing contracts at DHS.

Last week, Democratic lawmakerslaunched an inquiryinto Lewandowski and whether he sought personal payments from contractors while working at DHS.

The inquiry came after NBC News reported that Lewandowski asked some DHS contractors to be paidin exchange for protecting and growing their contractswith the department.

A representative for Lewandowski told NBC News earlier this month, "This is absolutely false and did not happen — Mr. Lewandowski never demanded any payment or compensation" from the contractor who alleged that he did.

Democratic senatorshave also opened a separate inquiryinto whether Noem or Lewandowski personally profited from a $220 million ad contract that featured Noem in 2025.

At the time senators launched the inquiry earlier this month, representatives for DHS did not respond to questions about whether Lewandowski or other DHS employees benefited from the ad contract.

After Noem's ouster from DHS, multiple sources familiar with the matter told NBC News thatTrump had begun askingthose around him what Lewandowski's role was in assigning contracts at DHS, including whether he had personally profited.

Noem and Lewandowski have also repeatedlyfaced allegationsof an extramarital affair, which they have denied.

Ilia Malinin is back on the top of the podium.

CBS News

Six weeks after adisastrous skate ledto the Olympic gold-medal favorite placing eighth inMilan, the "quad god" reeled off one huge jump after another, and a backflip for good measure, to retain his world championship title for the third year running.

Malinin shouted and punched the air with relief after finishing the skate. He also threw his hands up in the air after his score was read out.

Malinin praised the crowd's support, saying: "It was really challenging, really hard but with you guys I was able to make it through." His aim, he added, had simply been to get through the free skate "in one piece."

Malininpreviously told CBS Newsthat he didn't want to dwell on his disappointing Olympic performance.

"Everything happens for a reason," the 21-year-oldtold CBS Newsin February. He said he has to believe that "you learn a lot more from failure than you do winning."

Malinin is the first skater to win three consecutive men's world titles since fellow AmericanNathan Chen, who achieved the feat in 2018, 2019 and 2021 after the 2020 event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Skating last after leading the short program, just as he did in Milan, Malinin landed five high-scoringquadruple jumpsbut not hispioneering quad axel, a jump he didn't attempt at the Olympics.

Malinin scored 218.11 in the free skate for a total 329.40, far ahead of silver medalistYuma Kagiyamaof Japan on 306.67. Another Japanese skater, Shun Sato, was third on 288.54.

Kagiyama beat his personal-best free skate score but still had to make do with a fourth career world championship silver in a career which includes four Olympic silvers and five total worlds medals, but no gold from either event. He embraced Malinin after his skate and they jumped together in celebration.

In a showcase of top-level skating, there was no podium spot for France's Adam Siao Him Fa, who had been in second after the short program but dropped to fifth overall after a fall. Estonia's Aleksandr Selevko also dropped from third to sixth.

Malinin had no rematch with Mikhail Shaidorov, the skater from Kazakhstan who won the Olympic gold, because Shaidorov opted against competing again this season. That's a relatively common decision for figure skating gold medal winners, who face a rush of media and commercial opportunities after agrueling four-year Olympic buildup.

The last competition of the championships is the free dance portion of the ice dance event later Saturday. France's Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron are in the lead after Friday's rhythm dance.

Malinin told CBS News in February that he looks forward to continuing to push the boundaries of his sport.

"I think I would be much better to be known as "Quad God," as you say, rather than winning gold medal," Malinin said.
