Wrexham falls short of fourth-straight promotion, chance at Premier League place

Promotion to the Premier League is not in the cards forWrexhamthis season. The Welsh side fell short in their bid for a Championship playoff place on Saturday following a2-2 draw with Middlesbrough.

Yahoo Sports

There were several permutations that would have seen Wrexham finish in one of the four playoff spots, but between their draw and Hull City’s 2-1 win over Norwich, the dream for a fourth-straight promotion and a place in the Premier League came to an end.

Wrexham fell behind early against Middlesbrough after four minutes, but Josh Windass leveled the match with a 28th-minute free kick. Thirteen minutes later, Sam Smith gave the Red Dragons the lead. But hope was dissolved just two minutes later when David Strelec equalized just before halftime.

As the second half went on, Wrexham found themselves bouncing in and out of a playoff place with Hull and Derby remaining in the mix. Once Derby fell behind, it was up to Hull, who were boosted by an Oliver McBurnie 67th-minute penalty kick to lift them ahead of Wrexham in the table.

That meant Wrexham needed to win or hope Norwich tied Hull. Neither result happened and the Welsh side, who gained worldwide exposure after being bought by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020, will spend a second season in the Championship.

No English team had ever achievedthree consecutive promotions before Wrexham accomplished it last year. The club’s rebirth began after being sold in 2020. It has since launched popular TV show, “Welcome to Wrexham,” and seen revenues increase leading to an improve squad.

After eight seasons in the National League, Wrexham clinch its first promotion with a league title in 2023. The Red Dragons then followed that up with successive second-place finishes in League Two and League One to rise to the second tier of the English soccer pyramid.

Teenager accused of bomb hoax at Peter Kay show is remanded in custody after courtroom outbursts

A teenager charged over analleged bomb hoaxwhich forced a Peter Kay comedy show to be evacuated, and later cancelled, has been remanded in custody until next month.

The Independent US

Omar Majed, 19, was ordered to go down to the cells during an 11-minute hearing at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard thousands of fans had to be evacuated after Majed allegedly “barged” his way into Birmingham’s Utilita Arena last Friday without a ticket.

Prosecutor Ros Buttler told the court Majed was alleged to have indicated to a police constable and others that a bomb may have been left at the venue.

The alleged hoax had “serious repercussions” at an event with an expected crowd of almost 13,000 people, she added.

The charge against Majed alleges that he communicated to a police officer and others information, which he knew or believed to be false, that a bomb was present in the arena.

The incident took place at Utilita Arena in Birmingham last Friday (Alamy/PA) (Alamy/PA)

After confirming his address and date of birth at the start of the hearing, Majed, of Graham Road, Saltley, Birmingham, was repeatedly asked to be quiet by District Judge Michelle Smith.

District Judge Smith, appearing in court via a video-link, also made several requests for Majed to sit down.

After Majed shouted that proposed bail conditions for him were “not acceptable” he was taken down to the cells before the end of the hearing.

Majed gave no indication of plea to a single charge of communicating false information to police contrary to the Criminal Law Act.

Adjourning the case after submissions from the prosecutor and defence lawyer Lauren Clark, District Judge Smith also refused a bail application.

The judge said: “Based on everything I have read and have heard I am satisfied that the case should be dealt with in the Crown Court.

“The case will be sent to Birmingham Crown Court on June 1.”

Kay, aged 52, was ushered off stage during his show at the Utilita Arena on Friday.

The show was cancelled after the evacuation and West Midlands Police later said “nothing suspicious was found” during searches.

In an update on Saturday evening, the force said: “An evacuation of the arena was ordered yesterday evening after a report of a suspicious bag being left in the area.

“Following searches, nothing suspicious was found and we are grateful to everyone for their co-operation and understanding.

“As always our priority is the safety of the public.”

The show was part of Kay’s Better Late Than Never national tour, which will see all proceeds donated to 12 cancer charities.

Massey began the inning as the automatic runner at second base, stole third, and then scored on Garcia’s flyball to center field off Cooper Criswell (1-1).

The Royals tied the game in the ninth against Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz, as Salvador Perez led off with a single. Pinch-runner Lane Thomas advanced to second on a balk, and scored on Jac Caglianone's single to center that got by Julio Rodriguez and went all the way to the wall.

The Mariners scored first when Josh Naylor drove Rodriguez home with an RBI single in the first, but the Royals tied it with back to back doubles from Kyle Isbel and Garcia in the third.

That was the only run the Royals got against Hancock, who allowed six hits and no walks over seven innings while setting a new career high in strikeouts. It was a dominant performance on a night the Mariners retired the number of arguably the most dominant pitcher in franchise history, Randy Johnson.

Leo Rivas gave the Mariners a 2-1 lead when he scored from third on a wild pitch by Seth Lugo in the fifth.

The Mariners wasted a prime scoring opportunity in the fifth, when Randy Arozarena lost track of the count, and was picked off first base to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Starmer warns against political infighting as leadership challenge rumours heat up

Sir Keir Starmer has cautioned his party against repeating the Conservative Party's error of "descending into political infighting," amidst growing speculation of a leadership challenge. The Labour leader also stressed the necessity for the party to be more "united" to genuinely improve the lives of working people.

The Independent US Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer makes a statement in number 10 Downing Street, Westminster (PA)

This warning comes as reports suggest Andy Burnham, the Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester, is formulating a plan for a swift return to Westminster, potentially "within weeks," with the aim of challenging Sir Keir.

The Guardian newspaper said that Mr Burnham has identified several constituencies where sitting MPs are reportedly prepared to step aside, triggering by-elections that could facilitate his re-entry into Parliament. Furthermore, Mr Burnham’s allies are reportedly seeking to avoid a formal leadership contest against Sir Keir Starmer, instead hoping to initiate a process for him to resign following anticipated poor results for Labour in the upcoming 7 May elections.

The Daily Telegraph has also reported that Wes Streeting, the Shadow Health Secretary, is also preparing a bid to unseat the Labour leader. According to the newspaper, Mr Streeting has garnered the backing of more than 81 MPs for his leadership challenge, which is the minimum threshold required to trigger such a contest.

Setting out his his case in The Observer, Sir Keir said: “We have a choice. We could sink into the politics of grievance and division. Or we could rise to this moment – together – in a national effort that matches the scale of the threats and turbulence we face.

“I am talking about a national mission to become a stronger, more resilient, and more united nation, allowing us to take control of our future, raise our sights, and reach towards something better.

“When the nation rallied together to deal with Covid, the last government could have channelled that spirit to build a better nation.

“But instead, they descended into political infighting and let the country slump back to the old status quo. Not this time.”

He continued: “This government will reshape our nation. Over the coming weeks, through the King’s speech and beyond, we will set out our agenda of radical reform – with activist, interventionist government building a stronger and fairer country.”

Doubling down on his plans to forge closer ties with Europe, the Prime Minister said: “Recovery depends on rebuilding the strength of our economy to make us more resilient to these kinds of shocks in future.

“That means deepening our economic relationship with the EU.

“The world has changed since 2016. And Brexit today looks quite different. It has damaged our economy and there’s no doubt in my mind where the national interest lies.

“Britain must be at the heart of a stronger Europe on defence, on security, on energy, and on our economy. I will be at the European Political Community summit today to take this forward.”
