Prosecutors aim to announce charges over London's 2017 Grenfell fire by next June

LONDON, May 19 (Reuters) - British prosecutors said on Tuesday that they were confident of announcing who might face ‌criminal charges over the 2017 blaze that ravaged London's ‌Grenfell Tower killing 72 people before next June, the 10th anniversary of the ​disaster.

The fire was Britain's deadliest in a residential building since World War Two and prompted a national reckoning over building standards and the safety and conditions of social housing for low-income communities.

A public ‌inquiry's final report in ⁠2024 blamed the disaster on failings by the government, the construction industry and, most of all, ⁠the firms involved in fitting the exterior with flammable cladding, which had been marketed as safe.

At a briefing for reporters on Tuesday, ​Garry Moncrieff, ​the officer in overall command ​of the police investigation, said 57 ‌people and 20 companies or organisations "remain as suspects" for offences including corporate and gross negligence manslaughter, fraud and health and safety offences.

He said detectives would hand over files of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) by the end of September for it ‌to consider what charges should be ​brought.

Frank Ferguson, Chief Crown Prosecutor for ​CPS, which previously said ​it hoped to make charging decisions by the ‌end this year, said that "it is ​not possible to ​be definitive about timescales", but was "confident" this would occur by the 10th anniversary.

Police say their investigation into the deadly ​blaze was the ‌largest and most complex ever undertaken in the history of ​the London force.

Rory McIlroy told a fan to "shut the f--- up" and had them removed during the final stages of the PGA Championship.

The six-time major champion was playing the par-five 16th at Aronimink Golf Club and left his third shot in the bunker when he was disturbed by comments from the gallery.McIlroyconfronted them and delivered his expletive response before instructing security to remove them.

The remarks that angered McIlroy were not captured on the broadcast, but McIlroy'sirritation was evident. His failure to create a birdie opportunity greatly diminished his prospects of claiming the tournament.He had appeared frustrated throughout much of the week, dissatisfied with the PGA of America's course configuration.

Aaron Rai leads at nine under par, three ahead of Matti Schmid. Justin Thomas holds the clubhouse lead at five under.

McIlroy has experienced a challenging day at Aronimink, positioning himself poorly on the scoreable holes. Beginning the day at three under, he registered his first birdie at the second, but he then made 10 straight pars.

Nevertheless, the lead remained attainable, as only Rai from the numerous contenders managed to piece together birdies. But a bogey at the reachable par-four 13th dealt a significant blow to McIlroy's aspirations.

His second shot landed in the rough again, requiring all of his skill to scrape together a birdie.

However, when his pitch failed to crest the fringe and deflected right into the bunker, his frustration boiled over, with comments from the gallery sparking his fiery retort.

The episode came just a day after McIlroy had praised the crowd at Aronimink. He had endured some disgraceful treatment at the Ryder Cup in New York the previous year, but he noted that his reception in Philadelphia was a stark contrast.

"Again, 103 out of 104 weeks, I get pretty good support everywhere I go," he said. "It's just that one week every four years, I guess it is, that most of the crowd are on the other side, and that's fine. If I were them, I'd be on the U.S. side, too.

"But no, I do, I feel like I get a lot of support anywhere I go, and I'm very fortunate and very grateful for that."

USA TODAY report shows how conference realignment crushed the Pac-12

It was obviously a disaster for the Pac-12 Conference that the league splintered and watched USC leave. The Trojans left for the Big Ten, as did UCLA, Oregon and Washington from the West Coast. The Arizona schools left for the Big 12. So did Utah and Colorado. Cal and Stanford left for the ACC.Now USA TODAY Sports has detailson the extent to which the Pac-12's collapse crushed conference revenue.

"The numbers in it are jarring but also a reminder that this is a league that is building back up soon withseven incoming full members in 2026. The tax return was obtained from the league by USA TODAY Sports for fiscal year 2025, which runs from July 2024 through June 2025, a year in which Oregon State and Washington State were the Pac-12’s only members. Here is what it shows:

"Revenue collapsed from $566.6 million in fiscal 2024 to $111.5 million in fiscal 2025. This is primarily because there was a drastic reduction in television companies wanting to pay for their games. The league’s television rights fees went down to $3 million from $381 million in the previous fiscal year, when the Pac-12 still had 12 members.  Oregon State and Washington State football games in 2024 were televised byThe CW Network and Fox Sports. The depleted revenue stream also led to a deficit of $21.7 million after $133.2 million in expenses.

“'FY25 is the first of two build-up years ahead of the Pac-12’s launch as a new conference beginning with the 2026-27 season,' the league said in a news release May 15. That’s when the league will add Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Texas State and Utah State."

The Pac-12 could have played its cards differently ... but it didn't. The costs can now be seen in full.
