DUBLIN, May 20 (Reuters) - Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin has called for a thorough investigation into the death of a ‌Congolese-born man after he was restrained outside a Dublin department store, an incident ‌that has shocked the country's small Congolese community.

Irish police said the man was detained by security guards on Dublin's busy Henry Street last Friday in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident. He subsequently became unresponsive at the scene and was later pronounced dead, police said.

A video of the incident shared since on social media showed the man, Yves Sakila, being held on the ‌ground by a number of people for almost five minutes. At one point one of them appeared to kneel on his head or neck.

"The full circumstances of what happened need to be examined and investigated fully and thoroughly. The situation is deeply concerning," Martin told parliament on Tuesday.

Police said on Wednesday that investigations into all of the circumstances of the incident were ongoing. A man in his 80s was also injured at the scene as ‌Sakila attempted to flee, they said.

The Irish Network Against Racism expressed concern that excessive force may have been used against Sakila and said in a statement that "the death of a black man in such circumstances is extremely worrying."

Passers-by stopped on Henry Street on Wednesday where flowers were laid at the spot Sakila was detained.

"I ‌couldn't sleep at night. I just kept watching it (the video) time over time," said Sanaa Basit, a translator and mother of two who moved to Ireland from Sudan 10 years ago.

Laure Zoya, vice president of ‌the Congolese Community in Ireland group, said its members, who she said were among the first black communities to move to Ireland, were shocked, disturbed and no longer felt safe.

Sakila, whom police said was in his 30s, moved to Ireland when he ‌was very young, she added.

"The Ireland that they knew 30 years ago is no longer the same," Zoya told national broadcaster RTE.

Warriors mock draft roundup: Golden State eying Mexican prospect

Basketball experts are pinning down their mock selections over a month away from the 2026 NBA Draft on June 23-24.

USA TODAY

This draft class anticipates having among the best crop of talent to enter the league with players such as AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer, Caleb Wilson and Darryn Peterson.

TheGolden State Warriorshave to decide whether to will draft a prospect or trade their No. 11 pick.

Despite being heavy buyers in the trade market, the consensus is that Golden State will retain their pick and lean into scouting for the right piece. Head coach Steve Kerr looks forward to that selection and believes developing that pick will be a "huge factor" in their 2026-27 season.

"I think we're in a different place now. Right, there's no question. And I've talked to Mike (Dunleavy, the Warriors GM), I mean, I don't know the draft, but he feels really strongly that we're going to get a good player. It could be a 19 year old, it could be someone older,"Kerr told reporters.

The Warriors have been linked to a number of players, such as Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg, Arizona guard Brayden Burries and Michigan center Aday Mara.

USA TODAY Sports' Bryan Kalbroskypredicts Karim López going to the Warriors as the first-ever Mexican-born NBA draft selection. Kalbrosky described Lopez as "physically gifted, athletic, and universally seen as the top prospect from this class currently playing overseas."

"He exploded for 32 points (11-of-13 FG) with eight rebounds, two blocks and one steal against Melbourne on Jan. 30. Despite his age, he played a huge role for his team defensively for a team that won the NBL Ignite Cup. López measured well, weighing just shy of 222 pounds and 38-inch max vertical," Kalbrosky wrote.

Whoever is brought in, Kerr emphasized the Warriors' commitment to that players' development.

"It's obvious where we are with the injuries toMoses (Moody) andJimmy (Butler), you look at our depth on the wings, that guy has to play, and he's got to earn it, you know, but we're committed to absolutely, you know, the development of our young players," Kerr said. "(We're) trying to do this thing in a way that allows for success down the road. Down the road meaning the end of next season and beyond, and we're excited about that."

WHO says 139 suspected Ebola deaths in Congo outbreak, numbers expected to rise

GENEVA, May 20 (Reuters) - The World Health Organization said on Wednesday there were 600 suspected cases of Ebola and 139 suspected deaths and numbers are expected to rise given the time the virus circulated before ‌the outbreak in Congo and Uganda was detected.

A WHO Emergency Committee met on Tuesday in Geneva and confirmed the latest Ebola outbreak of ‌the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus was a public health emergency of international concern but not a pandemic emergency, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“The WHO assess the risk of the epidemic as high at the national and regional levels and low at the global level,” Tedros said.

He declared the emergency at the weekend, and he said it was the first time a WHO chief had taken that step without first consulting experts, due to the urgency of the situation.

"Our absolute priority now is to identify all the existing chains of transmission ... that will then enable us to really define the scale of the outbreak and be able ‌to provide care," Chikwe Ihekweazu, WHO emergencies chief, told the same press conference.

SUPER-SPREADER EVENT SUSPECTED

The outbreak has alarmed experts because it has been able to spread for weeks undetected across a densely populated area ravaged by widespread armed violence. A 2018-2020 outbreak of the Zaire strain of Ebola in the same region was the second deadliest on record, killing nearly 2,300 people.

The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected people or animals, has an average fatality rate of around 40%, according to the WHO.

Breaking down the figures in this outbreak, the WHO said 51 cases had been confirmed in Democratic Republic of Congo's northern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu. Uganda has also informed the WHO of two ‌confirmed cases in the capital, Kampala, including one death among two individuals who travelled from Congo to Uganda.

A U.S. citizen who was working in Congo has also been confirmed positive and has been transferred to Germany, the WHO said.

WHO experts said that they suspected the outbreak likely started a couple of months ago, with the first suspected death reported on April 20, however investigations were ongoing.

WHO officials believe after the first death there was then a super-spreading event either at a funeral or a healthcare facility. On May 5, a super-spreader event was detected with a social media report ‌of deaths in the communities, they said.

On May 12, the provisional government along with the WHO sent an investigation team where they collected samples. Eight out of the 13 samples were confirmed as Ebola.

QUESTIONS OVER FUNDING GAPS

Tedros said difficulty detecting the rare strain through testing, in a challenging conflict-hit environment, added to the complexity of limiting the early ‌onset of the outbreak. The early symptoms of the disease also resemble many other illnesses endemic in the region, such as malaria, he said.

Experts have suggested the delays in detecting the outbreak may also show gaps in preparedness following cutbacks by the U.S. and other major donors to global health funding.

Tedros said that it was too early to say whether funding cuts in Congo or to the WHO had contributed ‌to any delays in detecting or responding to the outbreak.

There is currently no vaccine available for the Bundibugyo strain. WHO experts said that two possible vaccines are under consideration but could take between three and nine months to be developed and need clinical trials.

Derek Lowe reveals Travis Kelce's demeanor on the golf course

This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired Major League Baseball All-Star and World Series Champion Derek Lowe.

USA TODAY

In his interview with Easton Jr., Lowe discusses his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe and air on NBC and Peacock. He explained the pressures of golf and revealed his interactions withKansas City Chiefstight end Travis Kelce.

"It's just a different type of pressure. It's when you play a sport for a living, no matter what it is, you're used to cameras and pressure. But golf, man, is a whole different animal. I remember the first time the cameras roll up on you and your hands start shaking," said Lowe. "There are people everywhere, but in due time you get used to the people being around, and you enjoy the moment." You give your best, and the majority of our athletes are definitely entertainers. When you grow up being competitive, you never take the competitiveness away from you."

Lowe has participated in many American Century Championship tournaments over the years, along with Travis Kelce, who is scheduled to return this year.

"Travis (Kelce) is just Travis, man, like, if you ever met him, he is a glorified kid, and I met his brother last year, Jason (Kelce). So, yeah, there's not one particular person, but it's all inspiring again when you go up and down the range," said Lowe, "The fact that I always laugh too, when they know who I am. That's what always makes me laugh. When someone sees me and says, 'Hey, Derek', I'm like, How in the world even know who I am? So it makes you feel pretty good about yourself."

The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, over $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC/Peacock and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in golf.
