The creator of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino, shared some insight into the hit series in an October 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
While speaking to the publication, Sherman-Palladino discussed casting her iconic Gilmore Girls characters, including journalist Rory Gilmore. She explained that she took a chance on Alexis Bledel, who didn't have much acting experience before auditioning for Gilmore Girls, which premiered in 2000. According to IMDb, Bledel's only role before Rory was an uncredited part in the 1998 film Rushmore.
"Alexis [Bledel, 'Rory Gilmore'] was the wild card because she had never done anything before. She was sick as a dog when she came in to audition. She didn't want to be there, but she just had a quality about her," said Sherman-Palladino during The Hollywood Reporter interview.
She explained that she was looking for an actress who could convincingly play an academically-driven teenager. According to Sherman-Palladino, many shows on The WB, where Gilmore Girls originally aired, had "a lot of young girls who were into boys."
"I wanted the girl who wasn't into boys. I needed the quality of somebody who was into books and had her friends and liked her life and was happy with her life, and didn't necessarily want to be a popular girl. She felt like she was cool with everything and that's a hard quality to find in Hollywood," said Sherman-Palladino to the publication.
Alexis Bledel Shared That Lauren Graham Helped Her Film 'Gilmore Girls'
Lauren Graham, who played Rory's charming mother, Lorelai Gilmore, had more experience than Bledel when Gilmore Girls began shooting. Before Gilmore Girls, which had a seven-season run, Graham appeared in shows like Caroline in the City, Townies, Law & Order, News Radio, and Seinfeld, as reported by IMDb.
During a 2005 panel at Paley Center for Media, Bledel explained that she had difficulty making her marks during scenes due to her inexperience as an actress.
"I would ease into my mark like a zombie," recalled Bledel, who was 19 when the show premiered.
She then shared that Graham began linking her arm with her to guide her to her marks. Bledel quipped that this helped the characters' chemistry.
Graham also said she believed she and Bledel had "a good partnership," despite being "very different people."
Graham made clarifying comments about leading Bledel to her marks while interviewing Gilmore Girls star Kelly Bishop, who played Lorelai's mother, Emily, in October 2024. She explained that "the learning curve on that show was just not normal" for a new actress. Graham explained that she wanted to ensure her scenes with Bledel went as smoothly as possible because of the complexities of the show.
"It's the language and the way we shot those long scenes with a steadicam operator," said the Parenthood star. "And there's so many things that can go wrong and some of them have nothing to do with the acting. It's a bird flies, the guy trips, or whatever. So to give that show its feeling of ease and breeziness you're also kind of like holding your breath, like please God let us get this properly to the end of the take."
