After a tense conclusion to Season 1, the new season of Matlock picks right back up where things left off. As Matty Matlock (Kathy Bates) scrambles to pull together the information she needs to turn over to The New York Times, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) throws a wrench in her plans after discovering that Matty had stolen her decoy Wellbrexa study. Now, after secretly recording Matty admitting to her fraudulent tactics while trying to intimidate Olympia into handing over the real files, all of Matty's leverage sits firmly in Olympia's hands.
Looking ahead to Episode 3, plenty of questions remain—chief among them: how will Matty and Olympia move forward from here? Despite both admitting to lying to each other over the past year, a path toward friendship still seemed possible. But now with Matty threatening to take the Wellbrexa scandal to the media, Olympia's family is directly in the crosshairs, giving her even more reason to derail Matty's plans for justice.

Is Matty's Career at Risk After Olympia's Betrayal?
If Matty's decision to lean on intimidation tactics felt out of character, you're not alone. Backed into a corner and on the verge of exposing the entire scandal, her own friend stands squarely in the way of immediate justice. While Olympia pleads with Matty to work together and focus blame on Senior (Beau Bridges) for concealing critical Wellbrexa documents—keeping Julian (Jason Ritter) out of the crossfire—Matty isn't ready to devote an uncertain amount of time to the case when she's already so close to achieving justice.
Matty's "outburst," while bold, played right into Olympia's trap. As the two navigate their motivations for justice, we see Matty begin to truly unravel—not just personally, but professionally. If Olympia were to use the recording strategically, it could threaten Matty's credibility and her career, even as their relationship leaves room for a possible understanding that keeps Julian's involvement under wraps while still delivering justice for Matty's daughter. After all, Olympia's reason for derailing Matty's plans to meet with The New York Times was to prioritize her family first—not to block justice.
Could Matty's Emotions Cloud Her Judgment Moving Forward?
As confident, smart and witty as Matty is in her Matlock role, we've seen plenty of moments where her emotions get the best of her. Over the first season, she ran the gauntlet of reasons to trust—or not trust—Olympia, all while still grappling with the grief of her daughter's addiction and untimely death.
And in the Season 2 episode "Another Matlock," that emotional side came to the forefront again: after being manipulated by Olympia, Matty delivers a fiery monologue, threatening to "burn this courthouse to the ground." It's a reminder that, as passionate as she is about justice, her emotions can sometimes cloud her judgment—and even put her professional standing at risk.
Now without any leverage, Matty is backed into a corner—one that might force her to play along with Olympia for the sake of her investigation. As the season progresses, it seems likely Matty will be working extra hard to keep her emotions in check, since Olympia clearly holds the upper hand in this high-stakes game of chess.

How Far Will Olympia Go to Protect Her Family?
A storyline that has stood the test of time: a mother protecting her family while morals and justice hang in the balance. Episode 2 of Season 2 ends by revealing Olympia's motivation for betraying Matty, showing her conversation with Julian, where she tells him that "a massive pay cut and living in the same building as a second-year associate is way better than a 6- by 9-foot cell." While Julian struggles with the stress of potentially going to prison for his past decisions, Olympia is working overtime to preserve her family unit, insisting that the two "need to move forward together" and are on the same team.
This dedication to her family has been tested since the end of Season 1, but it's fully in effect as we head into Episode 3 of Season 2. Olympia has shown she's willing to delay Matty's timeline for the sake of her family, even if it means postponing justice for the countless people already harmed by the Wellbrexa scandal. How Matty and Olympia navigate working together from here is still very much up in the air, but if their history tells us anything, it's that both are determined to protect their families—and clearly, neither will stop at anything to make that happen.
