Actor Paul Wesley is sharing his thoughts about a potential return to the Vampire Diaries universe.
In a September 2025 interview with Entertainment Tonight, alongside his Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-star Ethan Peck, Wesley revealed whether he'd ever consider playing his character, Stefan Salvatore, again. Wesley began playing Stefan during the first season of Vampire Diaries, which premiered in 2009, per IMDb. He continued portraying the vampire on the CW series until its 8th and final season.
In the Entertainment Tonight interview, Wesley said it may be difficult for him to be Stefan on-screen again because vampires don't age.
"Look, my character in theory has been eternally frozen at the age of 17. So, if perhaps there's some magical spell that aged Stefan, you know, 25 years, then perhaps," said Wesley in the interview.
In addition, he said he may be interested in reprising the character if he were given "the most brilliant script."
"Then maybe, you know, for some special occasion or something," said Wesley during the interview.
Paul Wesley Said He Had a Difficult Audition Process Before Landing the Role of Stefan
In a 2023 interview on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, Wesley said that the audition process to play Stefan was quite difficult. He said he first audition for the role of Stefan's older brother, Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder. After doing a callback for Damon, Wesley said that he was contacted to try out for Stefan because they hadn't been able to find a suitable actor.
According to Wesley, when he showed up for the audition, he was surrounded by "14 guys" who were also up for the role. He said that the audition process for Stefan was relatively quick because the show was about to start shooting.
In addition, Wesley said he decided to ignore Nina Dobrev, who had already been cast as the show's protagonist, Elena Gilbert. He said that while he came off as rude to Dobrev, he wanted their first interaction to be in the audition room in front of studio executives.
"[Elena and Stefan] were supposed to meet in that exact moment. And I thought well f--k that, I want our moment to be really special. I want her to get to know me in that moment," said Wesley in the 2023 interview.
Wesley said he believed his decision paid off.
"The first time we ever met in real life was actually in that audition room. And it was just a very magical moment. And I felt it and she felt it. And I know all those studio executives felt it. And I think that's what landed me the part," said Wesley on the Inside of You podcast episode.
