David Vetter lived with severe combined immunodeficiency, requiring an ultra-sterile plastic isolator from birth

He became known nationwide as “Bubble Boy” and later wore a NASA-designed containment suit

Texas Children’s Hospital established the David Center in his honor, advancing research into immune disorders

David Vetter’s family hoped for years that he would be cured.

Born Sept. 21, 1971 at Texas Children’s Hospital, the boy was was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a life-threatening disorder where people cannot fight infections due to a lack of T-cells or B-cells. With no immune system, even the common cold or flu could be fatal.

To keep him alive, David was forced to live in an isolated, ultra-sterile environment. The only way he could interact with loved ones was through a clear plastic bubble. He became known as “Bubble Boy” or “The Boy in the Bubble.”

He was eventually granted more mobility by wearing containment suits designed by NASA that resembled space suits.

His story seized the attention of the American public. As his mom Carol Ann Vetter recalled, once he became aware of his fame, David “told me that he was a star because his picture was in the paper the day before and stars don’t have to clean up toys. I told him that his picture wasn’t in the paper today, so today you clean up your bubble!””

When David was 7 years old, he met Dr. William T. Shearer, chief of allergy and immunology at Texas Children’s, who writes that David “put his arms in the gloves extending from his plastic isolator system to shake my hand and began quizzing me to make sure I understood that he was special and was competent enough to care for him.”

He continued, “At 7 years old, David was a very bright young man who had a vocabulary as advanced as some of my peers and enjoyed learning. He was very brave and courageous handling his situation and fighting germs and brought a great sense of humor that lightened up the room.”

Then an experimental treatment became available — one that doctors hoped would allow David to live outside the confines of his bubble. It was possible that a bone marrow transplant could help him develop an immune system.

“Our doctors told us that the operation was proving very successful, and that it was 99 percent safe. They said it would either work or not work. But if it didn’t work, we would simply be back to square one,” Carol Ann said, per PBS.

On October 21, 1983, David received a bone marrow transplant from his sister Katherine. Because he was in the bubble, he actively participated in giving himself injections.

But by Christmas, David began to get extremely ill. It turned out that his sister’s bone marrow had not been screened for the Epstein-Barr Virus, and it was now inducing a form of lymphoma in David.

As his condition continued to decline, he told his mother, “I’m tired. Why don’t we just pull all the tubes out and let me go home?”

On February 7, 1984, as death drew near, David came out of the bubble and was able to be physically embraced by his family.

On February 22, David spoke his last words — first to his friend and psychologist, Mary Murphy. As she was leaving, he told her, “Remember, I love you, Mary. Goodbye.” Then, he turned to his mother and said, “I love you all too.”

Carol Ann removed her mask and kissed her son for the first time. Moments later, David died.

“David was an incredible young man whose legacy has contributed to an even greater accomplishment and my life and has certainly been changed because of David and his family,” Shearer wrote, adding that Texas Children’s established the David Center at Texas Children’s in the late boy’s honor.

Every dog walks into a photo studio with its own personality, and Belgian photographer Paul Croes has a talent for letting it shine. Some of these four-legged sitters pose with the confidence of seasoned runway models, gazing straight into the lens. Others look slightly unsure about the whole affair, while a few steal the frame with a crooked ear, a puzzled tilt of the head or a perfectly timed tongue. Whether elegant, soulful or downright goofy, each portrait shows just how expressive our canine companions can be.

Bored Panda previously shared Croes’ moving Dogs and People series, which captured the bond between pets and their humans. This time, the owners step out of the frame and the dogs get the spotlight all to themselves. Among the stars of the collection are senior pups, dogs living with disabilities and others with unique physical features, each one a reminder that beauty rarely fits a single standard.

Scroll down to meet these unforgettable canine models, vote for your favorites and tell us in the comments which one stole your heart.

Before turning to animals, Croes built a career in fashion photography, and that experience shows in every frame. Dramatic lighting, deep dark backgrounds and carefully balanced compositions give the images the polish of a magazine editorial, yet they never feel overly staged. For the photographer, the goal goes beyond a beautiful picture: it’s the character and emotion that come through in a dog’s eyes.

Getting there takes patience. Instead of forcing anyone into stiff, unnatural poses, Croes gives every dog time to settle into the studio in Wiesbaden, Germany, and lets the personality come out naturally. Clients clearly appreciate the approach: the studio holds a perfect five-star average across 85 Google reviews, with many praising how calmly the team handles both pets and their owners. The result is a collection of portraits that are funny, touching, dramatic and surprisingly human, sometimes all at once.

Ranbir Kapoor, Yash Epic ‘Ramayana: Part One’ Sets Pay-Per-View Release on JioHotstar After Theatrical Run

Nitesh Tiwari’s “ Ramayana : Part One,” starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash , will be available to buy on demand from streamer JioHotstar in India after its theatrical run.

The deal between JioHotstar and Prime Focus Studios will see the film sold as a separate on-demand purchase on the platform. The companies described it as the first pay-per-view offering of its kind on JioHotstar. The film will stream in the best quality each supported device can handle. The epic, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi, follows exiled prince Rama (Kapoor) and his consort Sita (Pallavi) through exile into catastrophe, as Sita’s abduction at the hands of Ravana (Yash) sets in motion an epic war between righteousness and evil. Sunny Deol plays Hanuman and Ravie Dubey Lakshman. Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi, Kunal Kapoor and Kajal Aggarwal round out the cast. Popular on Variety

The film opens worldwide on Nov. 5, in time for the Diwali festival holiday, in the Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English languages. Imax 3D is among its formats. Sony Pictures Entertainment is releasing the film globally . The film’s Indian distribution will be handled by media personality Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

“’Ramayana’ is one of India’s greatest civilizational treasures – a story that has shaped our conscience, inspired our imagination, and guided the way we live for centuries,” said Nita M. Ambani, chair of JioStar. “As India enters a new era of storytelling, we have an extraordinary opportunity to carry our cultural legacy forward. At JioHotstar, our vision is to use technology to bring the finest stories within reach of every Indian. It is our privilege to present this grand cinematic vision of ‘Ramayana’ to families across the country, and introduce a new generation to its eternal values of duty, love, courage, and goodness.”

Prime Focus Studios is producing with DNEG, the visual effects and production company that has won eight Oscars, and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. “Ramayana” is a live-action project in two parts, with Shridhar Raghavan adapting Valmiki’s epic for the screen.

Namit Malhotra, the producer and filmmaker who founded DNEG and serves as its CEO, said he believes the film should be watched on the largest screen available, in Imax 3D.

“But our country’s cinema infrastructure cannot reach everyone who holds this epic close,” Malhotra said. “’Ramayana’ belongs to every Indian, and our ambition must reflect that. JioHotstar has time and again shown how technology can bring a nation together through its sports and entertainment offering. That made them a natural partner to take Ramayana into people’s hands and living rooms, after its theatrical run.”

The film brings in Oscar winners Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman as composers. Ravi Bansal and Ramsey Avery handled production design, and Terry Notary and Guy Norris oversaw the action. The film was designed with Imax and other premium large formats in mind, and the production mixes Indian and international talent.
