Two 15-year-old girls have been arrested after allegedly plotting a school shooting in California’s Riverside County

Police claim the teenagers researched school shootings online for several months and discussed where to obtain weapons, though they believe they were unable to do so

Both suspects remain in custody on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, police said in a news release

Two teenage girls in California have been arrested after allegedly plotting a school shooting online.

An investigation began on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when the FBI told the City of Corona Police Department that it had identified social media communications about a possible threat to Corona High School in Riverside County. Police subsequently arrested a 15-year-old female student at the school, per a City of Corona Police Department press release.

During the investigation, which involved “numerous” search warrants for electronic devices and searches of residences, police identified and arrested another suspect, a 15-year-old female student at the nearby Norco High School.

“The evidence obtained showed the two suspects had spent several months researching school shootings and discussed how they could carry out a potential attack at Corona High School on an unspecified future date,” police said.

The girls, who have not been identified, allegedly spoke about methods of obtaining weapons, but investigators believe they were unable to do so. No weapons were found during the searches, police said.

Both suspects remain in custody on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, police said in their Oct. 20 release. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.

Police didn’t provide any further details about the alleged plot, including whether the girls had identified any specific targets at the school.

The investigation continues, in collaboration with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and Corona-Norco Unified School District, and anyone with potential information is urged to contact the police at 951-279-3656.
