Jill McIlvaine was filming in her backyard in Palmetto Dunes, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, when a large eastern diamondback rattlesnake dropped into her pool and swam the length of it, headfirst and unhurried, before climbing out and heading toward the woods. Her daughter, Ellen McIlvaine, later shared the footage, and South Carolina wildlife officials confirmed the species after reviewing it.

What The Video Shows

The snake crosses the pool in a smooth, steady line, its head held above the surface while the rest of its heavy body trails behind in an S-curve, the same motion it uses on land. Once it reaches the far edge, it climbs straight out and moves across the patio and into the trees, seemingly unbothered by the detour through chlorinated water.

Jay Cantrell, assistant chief of wildlife for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, reviewed the clip and called the snake “absolutely” an eastern diamondback, adding that it looked like “a very healthy one,” The Cool Down reported.

A Strong Swimmer By Design

Eastern diamondbacks are the largest venomous snake in North America, with heavy-bodied adults regularly growing past six feet. They are usually associated with dry, sandy habitat, coastal dunes, Sandhills and open pine forests, where they wait coiled near animal burrows for prey such as rabbits and rice rats, according to the South Carolina Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. That dry-land reputation can make a sighting in water feel surprising, but rattlesnakes are capable swimmers that will readily cross ponds, creeks and, apparently, backyard pools when the woods on the other side offer a shorter route.

South Carolina DNR state herpetologist Andrew Grosse said the species is still common across the Lowcountry, though its overall range has shrunk as development eats into the longleaf pine habitat it depends on. He also noted that snake fungal disease remains a serious, often lethal, threat to rattlesnake populations in the region. Sightings like this one tend to spike in August and September, during the species’ breeding season, which can put more snakes on the move through yards and neighborhoods near the coast.

What To Do If It Happens To You

Wildlife officials are consistent on this point: leave the snake alone and keep your distance. Eastern diamondbacks don’t always rattle before striking, so the absence of that warning sound is not a sign of safety. If one ends up in a pool or yard, the safest move is to clear people and pets from the area, let the snake make its own way out, and avoid trying to herd, trap or kill it.

Its venom destroys red blood cells and damages surrounding tissue, and a bite from an adult can be medically serious or fatal without prompt treatment. Anyone bitten should seek emergency care immediately rather than waiting to see how symptoms develop. For a snake that simply swims through and leaves, as this one did, the encounter is best treated as a reminder to watch where you step this time of year, not a reason to go looking for it in the woods afterward.

Philadelphia Eagles Announce Major Jalen Hurts News After Blood Clot Diagnosis

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles yells as he takes the field before a game against the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field on September 13, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Emilee Chinn/Getty Images Tap Here To Add Us Magazine As A Trusted Source Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will be out of action for at least a month after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his calf , the team announced on Saturday, October 17.

Hurts, 28, was placed on injured reserve on Saturday afternoon and will miss at least the next four games, including the team's showdown with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, October 18.

Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is set to step up in Hurts' absence .

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that the team's decision to place Hurts on injured reserve came after consultations with multiple doctors.

Fox Sports' reporter Jay Glazer added additional context during Fox NFL Sunday .

"As they meet with more doctors and get more information, that's how they're making this decision," Glazer, 56, explained. "At first the blood clot, it was superficial. It wasn't moving around. But once it changed and that blood clot started moving, you do not mess around with a moving blood clot. That could be a life or death situation."

Glazer continued, "The only way for Jalen Hurts to come back — if he can come back this season — is that blood clot needs to be completely melted. They need to have several scans to make sure it's completely gone. Because if it's not and it floats up to the wrong areas, it could be very, very dangerous. It's a real life thing for Jalen Hurts. This is not a football situation."

The Eagles announced Hurts' diagnosis with a statement released via social media on Thursday, October 15.

"On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room after practice requesting treatment for his calf," the team said. "He informed the medical staff he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment session for the calf injury following the game, after having practiced in full both Wednesday and Thursday."

The Eagles lost to the Rams, 24-20, in Philadelphia on October 4.

"On Friday, Jalen received treatment, practiced in full, and was added to the practice report," the Eagles continued. "Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team's flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play."

Philadelphia lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 19-17, at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, October 11.

"Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia," the team said. "Jalen played without limitation in the game Sunday, received treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced in full on Wednesday, as reflected in the practice report. Throughout our time in London and this week, we have remained in communication with the league office regarding the matter."

"Movement in the small blood clot" was discovered during a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday, October 14.

"His health and safety are our highest priority," the Eagles concluded.

The earliest Hurts is eligible to return to the lineup is November 22 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Eric Dane Recalls 1st ALS Symptoms in Posthumous Memoir Excerpt

Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Prime Video Tap Here To Add Us Magazine As A Trusted Source Eric Dane detailed the early signs of his ALS diagnosis in his memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments , to be released nearly nine months after his death.

"I'm eating sushi with my kids and suddenly I can't work the chopsticks with my right hand. My hand tingles, and then my fingers feel numb," Dane wrote of his symptoms first showing up on January 7, 2024, per a book excerpt published by People on Sunday, October 18. "Some kind of weird nerve thing, I think. I shake it off. I'm probably texting too much. Three weeks later, it happens again, only worse. I can't grip the chopsticks at all."

After nine months seeking answers, Dane was diagnosed with ALS. The Euphoria actor immediately sought support from then-estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart . (Gayheart withdrew her petition for divorce amid Dane's ALS battle, which he publicly confirmed in April 2025.)

"We were married for 14 years, grew apart, filed for divorce, but never got around to signing the papers," he recalled in the book passage of Gayheart, now 55. "We've since stayed close, coparenting, going on vacations as a family, spending time together and now we talk every day. I say to Rebecca on the phone, 'It's what we feared.' I don't remember a single word I said after that."

Dane continued, "I remember only feeling a violent impact, like getting the wind knocked out of me, and Rebecca wailing on the other end of the phone, and then I really lose it, and my sobs make my body shudder, and I hear her words pouring out amid her tears, 'I'm here, we'll fight this together, I'm not going anywhere.'"

Dane, who shared daughters Billie and Georgia with the Jawbreaker actress , immediately pledged to fight the disease .

"I'm going to take this on. I'm going to fight. I'm going to show my girls how to walk through this life with grace and dignity, no matter what," he penned. " I am going to FIGHT. This has become my purpose. My reason. This is now my job."

"With heavy hearts, we share that Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," the Grey's Anatomy alum's family said in a statement shared with Us . "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."

The obituary added, "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time."

My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments will be released Tuesday, November 3.
