Most footage of lion prides hunting zebras begins with careful stalking and ends with one animal running for its life. This clip skips the quiet part. A zebra charges straight into a cluster of lions, slips past one set of paws after another, and somehow emerges from the other side still moving.

The escape looks like a pure display of speed, but the more interesting answer is happening in the turns. The zebra never gives every lion a clean line to attack, and none of them gets the secure hold needed to drag it down. By the time the pride reorganizes, its intended meal is already headed toward open ground. The entire sequence is fast, messy, and a useful reminder that a hunt is not over merely because the predator gets close.

Watch the Zebra Escape the Lions BelowDid the Zebra Really Run Through the Pride?

That is exactly what the visible portion of the video shows. The zebra approaches from the left and passes between multiple lions rather than turning away from the group. Several cats pivot, swipe, or lunge as it moves through them, but the zebra remains upright and continues beyond the cluster. No lion appears to establish more than momentary contact.

What the short post does not provide is equally important. It does not identify the location, date, individual animals, or what happened before and after the edited sequence. The lions may already have been pursuing the zebra, or the animal may have been forced toward them by terrain or other members of the pride outside the frame. We can describe the extraordinary escape without inventing a backstory for it.

The decision to run through the group may look irrational from a human perspective, but a fleeing animal works with the openings available in that instant. Turning toward what appears to be a gap can be safer than making a wide, predictable arc with a lion already close behind. The zebra needed only one usable route. The lions needed one clean tackle, and none of them got it.

Can a Zebra Outrun a Lion?

Not as easily as the familiar internet speed charts suggest. A major field study published in Nature examined thousands of high-speed runs by lions, zebras, cheetahs, and impalas in Botswana. Within both predator–prey pairings, the predators demonstrated greater speed, acceleration, and deceleration capacity than the animals they hunted.

That does not make capture automatic. Lions depend on a short, explosive attack because sustained pursuit is costly, and their advantage matters only if they can convert it into contact. A zebra that spots the danger early may increase the gap, force the lion to spend energy, or reach terrain that breaks the pursuit. In this video, the zebra is already extremely close to several lions. Its immediate problem is not winning a straight race; it is surviving the first few strides.

Once it clears the group, the equation changes. Every extra stride gives the zebra more room to react and forces the lions to accelerate, align themselves, and close the distance again. Lions are fully capable of catching zebras, but they are not interested in spending unlimited energy on a low-probability chase. If the first attack fails and the gap keeps growing, abandoning the attempt can be the smarter choice.

Why Can Sharp Turns Save a Zebra?

The same Nature study found that escape can favor prey at lower speeds, when the fleeing animal has a wider range of possible directions available with each stride. At maximum speed, turning options narrow. A predator can anticipate the path and use its superior acceleration or braking ability to stay close. Slowing just enough to cut sharply creates uncertainty and may force the pursuer to overshoot.

That principle is visible throughout the clip. The zebra angles between lions, adjusts its path as they converge, and never settles into a long straight line until it has passed the immediate danger. Each cat has only a fraction of a second to judge where the zebra will be. One missed step also interferes with the next lion’s approach, turning the pride itself into a temporary obstacle course.

Speed still matters, of course. A slow animal would not survive long enough to use those openings. The escape comes from combining speed with timing, balance, and rapid changes of direction. That is why a list of supposed top speeds cannot predict the outcome of a real hunt. The fastest animal does not automatically win; it still has to be moving in the right direction.

How Do Lions Hunt as a Group?

Female lions are the primary hunters in most prides, although males hunt as well. According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, lions hunt cooperatively and pride mates often separate into smaller subgroups. Hunters may fan out, approach from different directions, or move prey toward another lion positioned to attack. The arrangement can resemble teamwork without functioning like a perfectly rehearsed play.

Group size does not guarantee success. Participation varies among individuals, and additional lions do not improve every kind of hunt equally. Zebras are large, alert, and dangerous enough to injure a predator with a kick. A lion has to get close, seize the animal, and help bring it down while avoiding hooves. In the clip, the pride gets the proximity it needs but never achieves the control required to finish the hunt.

What Do Lions Normally Eat?

Lions are carnivores that feed primarily on other animals. Across Africa, their prey commonly includes medium and large hoofed mammals. Zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, warthogs, and impala may all appear on the menu, depending on the habitat and which animals are locally available.

Lions also take smaller prey, scavenge carcasses, and steal kills from other carnivores when the opportunity arises. Their flexibility is useful because hunts fail regularly and success varies dramatically with prey, cover, weather, group composition, and the starting distance of the attack. This pride came remarkably close to a zebra and still ended the sequence empty-handed. For the zebra, “close” was good enough.

Love Is Blind's Stew Addresses Shocking Jax Breakup Moments After Reveal

Courtesy of Netflix Tap Here To Add Us Magazine As A Trusted Source Love Is Blind season 11 contestant Scott "Stew" Stewart was admittedly blindsided by Jacqueline "Jax" Guelli ending their pod engagement moments after meeting face-to-face.

"How did I feel about the rejection? I mean, at the time, [I was] completely shocked, completely caught off guard [and] did not see it coming," Stew, 34, began in a Sunday, October 18, Instagram video. "But, unlike most of the bad dating moments in my life, I've been able to relive this one as many times as I've wanted to with you guys in real time."

He continued, "With the benefit of hindsight, maybe [I should have] seen that one coming."

Stew proposed to Jax, 31, sight unseen in the Love Is Blind season 11 pods, only for the skincare founder to call off their engagement moments after meeting in person.

In watching back his proposal, Stew learned lessons to apply to his dating life moving forward.

"Maybe a proposal isn't the best time to bring up how I think the [New England Patriots] are gonna do this year," Stew quipped on Sunday. "That all said, the comments, DMs, everything have been fantastic. I'm glad how many of you had the opportunity to laugh along with my missteps. It's been a crazy ride, you know, stay tuned [because there's] more to come."

Stew and Jax had a seemingly effortless pod bond throughout the experiment, which was filmed in 2025 and began airing on Netflix earlier this month. Their in-person reveal, however, was a turning point for Jax.

"I'm most nervous about the physical connection to kind of lock it in ultimately," Jax said in a confessional before entering the reveal tunnel. "I mean, can you even break up during this? I don't know."

Jax, who felt Stew was "very New England" and not who she pictured for her fiancé, subsequently informed producers that she wanted to leave the show on her own.

"Jax has just informed us, she does not want to go to Mexico with you," a producer told Stew in a follow-up confessional. "She asked to go home immediately. We offered her the opportunity to sit down and talk with you. She declined. ... She actually asked us not to provide any sort of situation for you to talk with her at this moment."

Stew, for his part, had been excited about his next chapter with Jax before her breakup bombshell.

"Wow, I guess the feelings were not mutual. It seemed like this really could've been something," he mused to the cameras. "I would still say that this was a profoundly positive experience. I have no regrets about taking this step. I have no regrets about doing this. Life goes on, and I'll be heading back to Boston, and we'll see what happens."

Stew and Jax are set to come face to face — again — in an upcoming episode of Love Is Blind to rehash their short-lived engagement .

The first five episodes of Love Is Blind season 11 are now streaming on Netflix. New episodes drop weekly on Wednesdays.

Julianne Moore Says ‘The Debut’ Is ‘One of the Best Scripts I’ve Ever Read’ as Jesse Eisenberg’s Musical Comedy Closes London Film Festival on a High Note

“ The Debut ” ended London Film Festival on a high note Sunday night as director Jesse Eisenberg and star Julianne Moore gushed over each other to a packed audience at the Royal Festival Hall.

“I mean, this movie stars my favorite person, Julianne Moore,” Eisenberg began as the duo came onstage to introduce the musical comedy. “But ironically, strangely, it’s the story of my life.”

Written and directed by Eisenberg, “The Debut” stars Moore as Mona Friedman, a shy New Jersey housewife who auditions for a part in her local theater’s production of a fictional musical called “Nosy Neighbors.” After she’s cast in the supporting role of Miss Danielle, Friedman’s life begins to unravel as she becomes more consumed with playing the part and falls under the spell of director Jerry Blankenbuehler (Paul Giamatti). Eisenberg said he started doing community theater when he was “7 years old and miserable,” and it changed his life forever. “I wanted to write about that experience in my life, but I could only picture Julianne, to the point where I was writing it and she was inspiring me,” he added. “It’s the most thrilling experience to watch her and edit her for two years.” Popular on Variety

Moore, wearing a chic black gown, returned the praise. She called “The Debut” an “incredible gift” and said it’s “one of the best scripts I’ve ever read in my entire life.”

“It was such an honor to receive it and such a thrill to go to work every day and to get to do this incredible part with these tremendous actors,” she said, adding of Eisenberg: “He’s a beautiful writer, exemplary director and just a great talent.”

In response, Eisenberg quipped: “I just want to note that the only time I’m called beautiful, it’s about writing.”

Sadly, Eisenberg said that Giamatti could not attend the U.K. premiere as he has COVID-19. “I wish he could be here. He is the greatest guy and you would love to hear him talk,” he said. “Paul’s been my favorite actor since I’m young, Julianne’s been my favorite actress since I’m young.”

Alongside Moore and Giamatti, “The Debut” also stars Eisenberg, Halle Bailey, Colton Ryan and Bonnie Milligan as actors in the musical. Bernadette Peters, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy and Havana Rose Liu round out the cast.

Of acting with his childhood heroes, Eisenberg said it was “the thrill of a lifetime” but also “very strange.”

“I was spending so much time enthralled with them, and then it was like Michael Jordan said, ‘Here, you take the ball!’ And I’m like, ‘What is this thing?’ So it was so distracting to me. I hope to never act alongside them again,” he joked. “I was my worst self.”

“The Debut” premiered at Telluride Film Festival last month, where it earned rave reviews and Oscar buzz for leading lady Moore. In Variety ‘s review , chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote: “‘The Debut,’ a small-town-theater comedy rooted in big ideas, is a funny and dizzying mind-bender. It’s like ‘Waiting for Guffman’ made by the Coen brothers at their most rivetingly unhinged.”

“The Debut” is set to hit theaters on Dec. 11 via A24.
