When it comes to your dream pet you may have your heart set on a Golden Retriever—or want a dog with the personality of a Golden Retriever. It’s understandable. Golden Retrievers are truly All-American pups after all and it’s easy to see why they are so beloved in the United States and all over the world. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Goldens are also a common choice for the T.V. shows and movies, like the Tanner’s family dog, Comet, in Full House and Buddy in Air Bud. As a result, they are often a top choice for people looking to bring a furry companion into their household.

Besides their popularity, their gorgeous looks—dare we say it—gives them “Golden Dog” status that also draws people to them. All together, it makes them equal parts elegant and irresistibly adorable. Of course, you shouldn’t just judge books by their cover or dogs by their good looks (which Goldens have in spades). Personality matters too. Goldens have great ones, if we do say so ourselves. They’re fun, affectionate, down for adventures, eager to please and generally friendly toward other pets and kids.

“They’re often the dog who wants to meet your friends, join your walk and then hang out near you afterward,” explains Bridget Murphy, the CEO of Koru K9 Dog Training.

Though, since these four-legged family members can shed a lot, need plenty of exercise and have lots of energy, Murphy says there are other Golden Retriever-like dog you might want to consider if your lifestyle or living situation doesn’t make you the perfect match for one. To help you out, we rounded up five friendly dog breeds that have Golden Retriever personalities—even though they aren’t one. Check them out below and see if any of them may be a better fit for you and your home.

5 Dogs With the Personality of a Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are fantastic dogs, but if you want a smaller pet or one that’s similar that has a shorter coat, consider these Golden Retriever alternatives as they share some of the same lovable traits.

1. Cocker Spaniel

Speaking of elegant coats, Cocker Spaniels certainly have one. They’re also sociable like Goldens, but they’re about 10 inches smaller and 30 pounds lighter, making them easier to care for if you’re an older adult, have kids, or you live in an apartment.

Looks aside, they also are very Golden-like when it comes to how they act. “A Cocker can have that same friendly, affectionate, ‘What are we doing together today?‘ energy in a smaller package,” Murphy says.

Murphy shares that Cocker Spaniels do require grooming to keep their stunning coat looking its best. So, keep that in mind.

Like a Golden Retriever, Cavaliers are people-lovers. They’re just smaller and can tolerate a gentler pace of life, Murphy explains. As a result they are better fits for seniors, first-time dog parents or people who live in apartments.

“They can be a lovely fit for someone who wants a close companion without a big sporting dog’s exercise needs,” Murphy says.

If you’re buying from a breeder, Murphy recommends asking about health screening, since this breed can have inherited health concerns. However, overall, when it comes to dogs similar to Golden Retrievers, you can’t go wrong with these sweet canine.

Breed Stats:

Personality: Affectionate, gentle, graceful

Height: 12–13 inches

Weight: 13–18 pounds

Lifespan: 12–15 years

3. Labrador Retriever

What’s the difference between a Labrador Retriever and a Golden Retriever? Honestly, they’re pretty similar in both appearance and personality. That’s why pet experts recommend them as Golden Retriever alternatives. Though, to be fair, due to the fact that Labs look like Goldens and act like them, some people have trouble telling them apart in the first place.

“Labs and Goldens have a lot in common,” Murphy says. “They’re social, playful retrievers who usually enjoy learning and being part of family life.”

Still, Murphy says a Labrador Retriever may be a better fit than a Golden for someone who wants a dog with a shorter coat that’s easier to maintain.

Breed Stats:

Personality: Active, friendly, outgoing

Height: 21.5–23.5 inches

Weight: 55–80 pounds

Lifespan: 11–13 years

Just because Brittany Spaniels are smaller than Golden Retrievers doesn’t mean they don’t share the same adventurous qualities that may attract some dog lovers to that popular breed. In fact, Murphy loves Brittany Spaniels for active families who genuinely like walks, playing games and won’t mind training these pups.

“A Brittany can bring the sunny, eager-to-work side of a Golden in a somewhat smaller, lighter-built dog with a less demanding coat,” Murphy shares.

Breed Stats:

Personality: Bright, fun-loving, upbeat

Height: 17.5–20.5 inches

Weight: 30–40 pounds

Lifespan: 12–14 years

5. Weimaraner

This large dog breed dog has the same lovable energy as a Golden! So if you’re obsessed with a Golden Retriever’s temperament and loyal nature, but are curious what other pups are similar in that regard, these companions are worth considering.

“A Weimaraner may appeal to someone who loves how involved Goldens are with their families but prefers a sleek, short coat and wants an enthusiastic exercise partner,” Murphy says. “They can be deeply devoted and a lot of fun for an active, experienced home.”

Murphy points out that dogs that are similar to Golden Retrievers aren’t “easier” to own than Golden Retrievers. They are more of a different option for dog lovers who aren’t 100% sure what breed is best for them. “Like Goldens, a Weimaraner’s energy and need for company can be quite high,” she clarifies.

Breed Stats:

Personality: Friendly, fearless, obedient

Height: 23–27 inches

Weight: 55–90 pounds

Lifespan: 10–13 years
