Man Was Filming ‘Extraordinary Wildlife Encounter.’ Seconds Later, Hyenas Were Sprinting at the Camera (Exclusive)

During a trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Khalyl Warren was filming as a group of hyenas started sprinting at him
The experience was frightening and humbling, and it continues to stick with him today
Warren opens up to PEOPLE in an interview about the one-of-a-kind moment captured on video
Khalyl Warren believes he has a strong connection with animals — but during a recent trip to Botswana, things took a frightening turn.
Warren, a 24-year-old veterinary assistant from Chicago, had traveled to the Okavango Delta on a family trip. Though he was mostly there to enjoy his time with his family members, he tells PEOPLE the trip’s location “made the experience especially significant to me.”
“I was excited to see wildlife in its natural environment rather than in a clinic, sanctuary, or controlled setting,” he continues. “We were visitors in their environment, and our responsibility was to remain aware, respectful, and prepared to follow the guidance of people who understood the area.”
One evening, he and several family members were returning to their rooms at their resort after dinner. As they passed the resort staff’s cabins, they realized that something was not quite right: there was a pack of hyenas circling the resort.
“At first, it was difficult to understand exactly what was happening because everything unfolded so quickly,” he says, noting that he was initially filled with “excitement and curiosity” about their proximity to wildlife. But that soon turned into “fear and uncertainty” as the animals moved closer.
The staff started giving them instructions: not to run because it could cause the animals to chase after them, to take deep breaths, to remain calm and let the hyenas make their way through the area.
From what Warren could tell, a pack of hyenas appeared to be moving away from three lions that were pursuing them. But even though he had a sense that the hyenas were not particularly interested in him and his group, he says it didn’t make “the situation feel any less intense” when they started approaching them.
In a harrowing video he shared to TikTok in July, viewers can see Warren’s camera spiral out of control as the hyenas — their eyes glowing in the night — approach them.
“I was trying to document an extraordinary wildlife encounter. But as the hyenas moved closer, the purpose of the camera became unimportant,” he tells PEOPLE. “We were suddenly much closer to the action than we had expected.”

After the camera stopped, Warren, listening to the instructions of the resort staff, stayed in his position and let the hyenas make their way by. He says he had to “consciously slow myself down” — controlling his breathing — because he knew that any sudden movements could make the situation far more dangerous.

“Once the hyenas moved away, the intensity of the moment began to settle, but the experience stayed with me,” he says.
Several months out from the encounter, Warren says that one thing in particular has continued to stick with him: that brushes with wildlife “are not performances.”
“They are real situations involving animals that are responding to survival, territory, fear, and instinct,” he adds. “The encounter gave me an even deeper appreciation for wildlife and for the importance of respecting animals in their natural habitat. It reinforced the idea that people should never assume they understand an animal’s intentions simply because they are familiar with the species.”

Every time fall rolls around, the impulse to redecorate is strong. A fall refresh doesn't have to mean repainting a room or buying all new furniture. Thoughtfully chosen accents can completely shift the mood, especially when you layer in the rich textures, warm lighting and cozy fabrics. These small changes will carry your space well beyond the autumnal season .
Ballard Designs has plenty of pieces that make transitioning your home for fall surprisingly simple, whether you want to switch up your bedding, add a plush pillow or bring warmer tones into a room through lighting and accessories. We rounded up eight easy updates that add depth, texture and a little seasonal personality while maintaining year-round appeal.
1. Moody Glow: This tortoiseshell glass lamp brings rich amber and brown tones into a room and casts a cozy glow. It's an easy way to make a side table, bar cart or bookshelf feel warmer as the days get shorter.
2. Subtle Seasonal Touch: A glass pumpkin offers a nod to the season without veering into kitschy territory, while the candlelight adds an extra layer of warmth. Place it on a coffee table or entryway console for an easy autumn update.
3. Bedroom Refresh: Scalloped edges give this bedding a decorative finish while still feeling timeless enough to use year-round. Switching out your bedding, or simply layering in a few new pieces, is one of the quickest ways to make the entire bedroom feel refreshed.
4. Playful Texture: Quilting and pom-pom trim give this sham plenty of visual interest without requiring a complete bedding overhaul. Layer one or two onto your existing bed to bring in extra softness and dimension.
5. Velvet Upgrade: Few materials feel as synonymous with fall as plush velvet. The fringed edges add even more texture, making this pillow an easy swap when you want a sofa or armchair to feel richer and cozier.
6. Layered Neutrals: This textured pillow makes an impact when it's mixed with smoother fabrics like satin, linen or cotton.
7. Pattern Underfoot: An antelope-inspired pattern brings a sophisticated dose of personality to the floor without overwhelming the rest of the room. The hand-tufted construction adds another tactile layer that's particularly inviting for fall.
8. Antique-Inspired Accent: The ornate silhouette of the Beaumont Mirror brings instant character to an otherwise simple wall. Try it above a console or mantel to create a focal point that feels collected rather than overly decorated.

Harry and Meghan told 'go back to America' by former royal aide over Instagram postDaniel Windham Wed, October 14, 2026 at 2:54 PM UTC

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been urged to rethink their plans in the UK following backlash over their recent social media posts from a former royal insider.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come under fresh scrutiny since returning to Britain, with ongoing questions surrounding their security provisions and their position within the royal family.
During an interview with TalkTV host Jeremy Kyle, ex-royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter offered a frank evaluation of the Sussexes, criticizing what he perceives as a glaring inconsistency in their stance on privacy. It comes amid reports that Harry is worried that recent security review measures announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood may postpone a ruling on his own risk evaluation.

His remarks followed Meghan posting footage of her children during a rural outing, just ahead of an anticipated joint appearance with Harry in Nottingham, England.
In the Instagram Story uploaded on Sunday afternoon, Prince Archie, seven, rode a scooter along a tree-lined country road while his five-year-old sister, Princess Lilibet, walked beside him.

Their labrador, Pula, also appeared in the clip, which featured The Temptations' song My Girl, reports the Express.
A herd of deer could be seen in the background. Neither Harry nor Meghan appeared in the footage.
The upload came after footage surfaced showing the Princess of Wales riding the London Underground with her daughter, Princess Charlotte, and engaging with members of the public.
Jeremy proposed that the contrasting videos had intensified a perceived media competition between Catherine and Meghan, questioning Arbiter about whether a struggle for public attention was unfolding.
However, Arbiter dismissed the notion that the women were locked in a direct rivalry.

"No, there is no media war. It's a war being created by the media," he said.
He subsequently challenged the Sussexes' methodology of publishing family content while expressing worries about protection.
"They are describing what Catherine did, going onto a London Underground with her daughter, and you saw her daughter's face, whereas with Meghan and her children, all you see is the back of their heads," he said.
Arbiter continued, "Look, if they're so concerned with security, don't tell people where you are. Don't tell people what you're doing and don't post on social media."
He contended that the couple's behavior seemed at odds with their stated concerns, stating, "It seems to be a double standard and hypocrisy."
Harry's continued push to obtain enhanced protection during UK visits also drew criticism throughout the interview.
Arbiter raised questions about whether taxpayers should foot the bill for security for the family, considering that Harry and Meghan have stepped back from royal duties.
"It will upset a lot of people if they are forced to contribute taxpayers' money to provide security to two people, four people, who are not working royals," he said.
He further criticized what he characterized as the couple's demands after returning to the UK, saying, "They failed in the States, they come back here and they expect everything to open up for them.
"Life's not like that. You don't say 'open sesame' and life falls into the pattern that you want. You've got to work hard for it."

He wrapped up with a pointed recommendation for the Sussexes, "And my suggestion is, pack your bags, go back to America."
Harry and Meghan arrived back in Britain this past August following a six-year residence in the United States. The pair are scheduled to make a joint appearance in Nottingham on Thursday, representing their first collaborative public engagement since returning.
The location carries special meaning for the duo, as it was where they made their inaugural public outing together following their engagement announcement in 2017.
Their appearance occurs as ongoing discussions persist regarding their status and security protocols.
A correspondence dispatched last month under the King's authority allegedly characterized the Sussexes as "private citizens," a designation that reportedly caught the couple off guard.
