A massive fire erupted inside a recreational vehicle in Texas in August, killing two young children trapped inside — and now, their parents are facing murder charges in connection with their deaths.
In the early morning hours of Aug. 11, the Cleveland Fire Department in Cleveland, Texas, responded to a 911 call about an RV that was engulfed in flames with occupants trapped inside, according to a news release from the Liberty County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Firefighters found two children deceased inside the trailer, according to the the release.
When firefighters arrived at the wooded property on County Road 3819, the camper was collapsing, but the crew members still went inside, said Cleveland Fire Chief Sean Anderson, according to ABC 13.
“They went ahead and crawled in, extinguishing it when it was on fire,” Anderson said, per the Montgomery County Police Reporter. “They found the kids inside.”
The children were found at the front of the RV and pronounced dead at the scene.
The toddlers have since been identified as siblings Mavryck “Mavy” Len, 4, and Skylar Jayne Chambers, 3, according to their obituary.
According to the news release, an investigation at the scene and subsequent interviews led authorities to arrest the children’s parents, Meaghan Michelle Herrod, 30, and Matthew Allen Chambers, 39.
They are charged with two counts each of felony murder and are being held in the Liberty County Jail on $1 million bond, online jail records show.

The children’s grandmother, who did not want to be identified, told KHOU 11 that Herrod and Chambers had just left the RV when the fire erupted.
“They had walked from their trailer to my daughter’s house, just opened up the door, and one of the neighbors started screaming there was a fire, call 911,” the grandmother told the outlet. “So naturally they all ran back to the trailer.”
By the time they got there, the grandmother said, “It was too late. My daughter got the door open, but it was engulfed.”
A chaplain came to the scene to provide support to the family and responding firefighters, per the outlet.
The investigation was conducted by the Liberty County Fire Marshal Office with assistance from the Liberty County Sheriff Office and the Liberty County District Attorney Office.
