The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated from Montecito, California, to the United Kingdom in late August 2026 with children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in tow. News broke at the time that the young royals were enrolled in a local British school for the fall semester — a central reason behind the timing of the move.
Despite their geographic shift, Harry and Meghan are not resuming royal duties. King Charles III revealed in a letter obtained by multiple outlets that the pair's charitable work "is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests."

Multiple outlets — including the BBC and The Telegraph — reported on August 19, 2026, that Harry and Meghan planned to relocate to England. The family touched down in the U.K. before the end of the month. The couple also plan to keep their Montecito residence, as well as a vacation home in Portugal.
Harry and Meghan originally relocated to California in 2020 after stepping down from their duties as senior working royals, welcoming daughter Lilibet the following year.
"They aim to be somewhere outside of London, not in, like, the city proper," a source told Us of the move back. "They are open to a new chapter."
According to the insider, Meghan will continue running her As Ever lifestyle brand from their new home base.
Meghan shared the first glimpse at the family's life in Britain in a September 12, 2026, Instagram video, captioned with only a Union Jack and red heart emoji. In a video montage, the couple walked in the British countryside, with Lili riding her bike down a lengthy driveway as Archie cheered her on.
Meghan was later photographed in England for the first time since the move, meeting friends Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi at The Three Horseshoes near Burford, Oxfordshire.
Meghan's best friend Kelly McKee Zajfen , a cofounder of the Alliance of Moms, also posted photos from a visit that month.
"Having the best time," Zajfen wrote via Instagram in September 2026. "There's something so special about getting a taste of this magical place with my bestie, and having my sweet [son] Jack along for the adventure."
In Zajfen's images, she sat with Meghan in the countryside while Harry played with her son in a separate snapshot.
Harry addressed the move publicly for the first time at the Invictus Spirit Awards on September 17, 2026.
"My highlight so far? Do I have to share it with you?" he said at the time, telling Hello! , "Look, the last few weeks have been ... eventful."
After the family's move, Archie and Lili began attending a local British school, but they left days later over security concerns. Following their new school's start, they faced another security incident when photographers were spotted on the grounds.
"There is a world of difference between legitimate media activity and photographers walking the perimeter of a school, stopping to look into the grounds and monitoring children as they go about their day," a rep for Harry and Meghan told Us in a September 30, 2026, statement . "To behave in this manner in these particular circumstances, and so soon after [a similar] incident at RAF Fairford, demonstrates an extraordinary lack of judgment."
The spokesperson added, "Whatever photographs they may have been seeking, this was not only an unacceptable intrusion into the privacy of children; it was an irresponsible and ill-considered way to conduct themselves in the vicinity of a school."
