On the morning of July 26, 1993, Harry Tooze, 64, and his wife Megan, 67, ran errands before returning to their farm

Around 1:30 p.m., neighbors heard gunshots coming from the couple’s farm

The couple were found dead and the case went cold for decades and remains unsolved

An 87-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a couple found in a cow shed on their farm in rural Wales has been released as police continue to search for their killer.

On the morning of July 26, 1993, Harry Tooze, 64, a retired fruit wholesaler, and his wife Megan, 67, drove from their farm in Llanharry, near Cardiff, to a grocery store in Talbot Green to go shopping and pick up their pensions before returning home at about 11 a.m., the BBC reports.

At around 1.30pm, neighbors heard two gunshots — but, being on a farm, this was not considered unusual, the South Wales Police said in a statement in December 2025.

When their daughter, Cheryl, was unable to reach her parents by phone, she called a neighbor, who said he didn’t think they were home, and then the police, who found the couple’s bodies in a cow shed on the property.

They had each been shot in the back of the head, covered in carpet and hidden under hay bales, police said, the BBC reports.

Detectives said they believe the couple was shot elsewhere on the property and moved to the cow shed, per the BBC.

Cheryl’s boyfriend, Jonathan Jones, was arrested in Dec. 1993 and charged with the murders. Convicted of killing the couple and sentenced to prison, he appealed and was later released.

The case went cold until 2023, when police reopened the case.

The forensic review of the case led to the arrest of the then-86-year-old man in connection with the killings in December 2025.

On Oct. 2, 2026, however, South Wales Police announced in a statement that the man, who was not identified, was no longer a suspect.

“Following a thorough review of evidence by detectives carrying out a forensic review of the murder of Harry and Megan Tooze in 1993, the 87-year-old man who was arrested in December, 2025, has been advised that he is no longer under investigation and has been released with no further action,” South Wales Police said in a statement.

“We remain committed to solving these dreadful murders which happened more than three decades ago,” said Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea of the South Wales Police Major Crime Investigation Team.

“It is never too late to come forward - even with this passage of time I appeal to anyone who has any information about the murders to come forward and speak to us because information they have may help us get justice for the family.”
