A wildlife photographer has shared endearing footage showing first-year grizzly bear cubs appearing reluctant to follow their mom across a road in Grand Teton National Park.
"The cubs were definitely questioning mom’s judgement," Tammy Neufeld joked this week via Facebook.
Neufeld's footage was captured during the summer and involves Grizzly Bear 1063 and her triplets, which stand out because of their distinctive blonde faces.
Grizzly Bear 1063, daughter of a famous bear named "Blondie," is familiar with Grand Teton highways. But she has been elusive with this set of triplets. (Click here if video player doesn't appear below.)
In 2024, Grizzly 1063 emerged from hibernation as a first-time mom with three cubs. The family was spotted frequently the following spring – before tragedy struck.
Two of the cubs were found dead after apparently being attacked by an adult male grizzly bear.
The third cub, dubbed "Miracle," survived an ordeal that involved a lengthy separation from mom. The cub was eventually translocated by park staff to a more remote section of wilderness.
In Neufeld’s footage, one of 1063's cubs blindly follows mama onto the roadway, while two cubs appear skeptical, standing to investigate their surroundings.
Once mama bear has plotted a safe route, however, all three bears are shown scampering to reach the other side.
