Bronchial asthma, or simply asthma, is, according to the Cleveland Clinic, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes the breathing tubes in the lungs to swell, narrow, and produce extra mucus. Symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing, and while the vast majority of asthma attacks can be managed with treatment, a severe attack can prove fatal through asphyxiation and respiratory failure.
