Prince Louis is the youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton. He’s also the third grandchild of King Charles.
The rambunctious young prince has shared several sweet moments with his grandfather, and they seem to have a close bond.
In 2022, the pair won hearts with their adorable interaction during the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.
Prince Louis seems to hold a special place in his grandfather King Charles’s heart.
Ever since the youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived in April 2018, he’s been charming the public and his family with his playful antics and happy demeanor. When he turned 2 in 2020, the official Clarence House Instagram account shared a never-before-seen photo of Charles hugging Louis, with mom Kate credited as the photographer.
During Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in June 2022, royal fans got to witness their bond in action. Louis, energetic as ever, watched part of the parade from Charles’s knee. The cheeky prince’s grandfather bounced him up and down and pointed at the spectacles passing by. “When you consider that (Charles) has been said to be a remote parent, to see him do that was charming,” a palace insider told People after the event.
Besides snapshots of the sweet moments they’ve shared, there are also numerous anecdotes about Louis entertaining the king. Dame Penny Mordaunt reportedly shared at the 2026 Cheltenham Literary Festival that the king was “bored out of his mind” during coronation rehearsals in 2023, per The Telegraph—but his demeanor completely changed when Prince Louis arrived. According to Mourdant, Charles “suddenly sprung to life” and even paused the rehearsal to show Louis, then 5, the Crown Jewels of England.
Charles is said to love being a grandfather. His wife, Queen Camilla, told BBC One in the 2018 documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70 (per People) that he was great with her grandkids. “He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know, making funny noises and laughing, and my grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him.”

The king was in good spirits as he and his wife arrived at Prince Louis’s christening ceremony. According to People, the proud new grandparents were the first to enter the Chapel Royal in St. James’s Palace in London. Kate, walking behind her in-laws, carried 11-week-old Louis. He wore the ceremonial royal christening robe.

Louis has a tendency to go viral whenever he appears at a royal engagement, whether it’s because he yawned, made a silly face, or had a cute interaction with one of his relatives. At Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in June 2022, he checked all the aforementioned boxes—but it was his adorable interaction with his grandpa that captivated onlookers. Both Charles and his mother, Elizabeth, had their attention pulled from the annual Trooping the Colour parade in 2022 by the animated young prince. Louis could be seen asking his great-grandmother questions as Charles looked on and smiled, per Good Morning America.

Louis looked as festive as a greeting-card character on the royal family’s annual Christmas morning sojourn to St. Mary Magdalene Church at Sandringham in 2023. Although the prince—dressed in plaid pants and a peacoat—held hands with his father, William, and walked behind Charles, he stayed close to his grandfather during the walkabout.

Another year, another Trooping the Colour where Louis stole the show. Standing right beside Charles and big brother Prince George, Louis gamely waved at onlookers from the Buckingham Palace balcony. Perhaps noticing that it was his then-7-year-old grandson’s most mature outing at the parade yet, the king was photographed smiling at Louis.

While photos don’t quite do the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it interaction justice, Charles shared a sweet greeting with Louis before the family went inside for a traditional Easter Matins service at St. George’s Chapel, inside the grounds of Windsor Castle. The king could be seen tapping the boy on his shoulder and smiling at Louis’s sister, Princess Charlotte.
