Prince George was given a nickname by his classmates, which evolved into an unexpected moniker that was adopted by his family.

George received the pet name while attending Thomas’s Battersea School, where he was enrolled from 2017 to 2022.

Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Kate Middleton, and Prince William all each have their own nicknames, as well.

Royals really are just like us—meaning they, too, have cute and silly nicknames. But, the backstory on Prince George’s pet name might just take the cake.

While attending Thomas’s Battersea School, where the eldest son of Kate Middleton and Prince William was enrolled from 2017 to 2022, he was given the name P.G. by his classmates for obvious reasons, according to The Mirror. Eventually, that morphed into a very British nickname: P.G. Tips, which is a popular brand of tea across the pond.

It often gets shortened to just “Tips” when he’s with close friends and family, adding just one more layer of relatability to the royals. The royals continue to use it in the hallowed halls of Kensington Palace and Anmer Hall.

“He’s very popular and has a lot of friends, and there’s very little fuss made about who he is,” an insider told Vanity Fair, per the Mirror.

Of course, George has had a couple of school changes since then, as he transferred to Lambrook School (where his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are still enrolled) from 2022 to 2026. In September, George started at his father’s alma mater, Eton College.

George’s siblings also have nicknames of their own. The Princess of Wales calls her youngest son, Louis, “Lou Bugs,” while Charlotte sometimes gets called “Poppet” or “Lottie.” As for grandpa, even King Charles can’t escape a casual nickname: Princess Anne calls him Old Bean.

During an appearance on The Sun‘s Royal Show, biographer Ingrid Seward shared that Kate and William also use nicknames for one another. Kate has sometimes referred to her husband as “Big Willie,” while William was known to call his wife “Babykins” early on in their relationship.
