Connie Britton talked about the secret to her hair in her cover story with PEOPLE, out this week

The actress admitted that she’s “hopeless” with her hair but revealed the simple routine she does when she’s not working with her hairstylist

Britton also looked back on her hairstyle in the 1995 movie The Brothers McMullen

Connie Britton is spreading the word about the secret to her enviable hair.

The Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated star’s hair has followed her throughout her career, and the key to styling it is having a skilled pro and great products on hand — because otherwise, she tells PEOPLE, “I mean, I am hopeless with my hair.”

Hairstylist Creighton Bowman works magic on Britton for high-glam moments, and when she’s left to her own devices, the Nashville alum, 59, says, “my hair is dry, so I put a lot of moisturizing product in it, but I don’t wash it all the time. I wash it once a week.”

“And it gets better when it’s not so clean,” she admits, adding that instead of doing her own blowouts, all she does is scrunch her hair to get it curly. “That’s it. I’m just really lucky, I have to say.”

Britton’s blonde has been a constant on and off screen as well, but back when she was in the 1995 indie film The Brothers McMullen, she rocked her natural hair color.

“I don’t think I had ever colored my hair before. So my hair had more of a brown to it, like a light brown. Everybody’s always like, ‘You have to have some red in your hair.” And I’m like, ‘I did a little bit.’”

In her cover story, Britton — who is filming the new psychological drama Phony (Oct. 20 on Hulu) — also said she’s “just living my dream and feeling grateful every day” while reflecting on her career. And she’s living “another dream come true” alongside her fiancé, David Windsor (the two announced their engagement in October 2025). “I mean, it just is and [it] took a long time coming.”
